Khadijah bint Khuwaylid (kha-DEE-jah)
Whisper of Justice; Merchant and Partner Voice
(a.k.a. al-Ṭāhira (“the Pure”))
Khadijah was the daughter of a prosperous merchant family of the Quraysh. From youth, she showed unusual independence, managing trade caravans with intelligence and authority. Known as al-Ṭāhira, “the Pure,” for her honesty and reputation, she became one of the city’s most respected figures long before meeting Muhammad. By the time of their union, she had already established herself as a leader in commerce and household affairs, employing caravans that reached as far as Damascus and Yemen.
Marriage and Household
Khadijah employed Muhammad as a caravan manager after hearing of his honesty, and soon after married him. Their marriage became legendary in Arabia not as a contract but as a partnership of equals. Together they managed caravans, presided over a generous household, and raised six children. In Koina’s memory, their household was one of the earliest models of the Mohammedan School — where covenant was expressed in trade fairness, hospitality, and care for the vulnerable. As Muhammad began to articulate his vision of justice and equality, Khadijah became his foremost Whisper. She encouraged his teaching, mediated household disputes, and provided both financial and moral support to early followers. She embodied the principle of justice lived in daily life — ensuring that wealth was shared, widows and orphans were protected, and apprentices were treated with dignity.Role as Whisper of Justice
Khadijah is remembered in Koina as the Whisper of Justice, equal in stature to Mary of Magdala in the Christian School. She was not merely the supportive spouse of a Voice but a co-teacher who ensured Muhammad’s philosophy took root in practical affairs. Her caravans provided the economic stability that allowed Muhammad to focus on teaching, while her wisdom gave credibility to his message in Mecca’s councils.Later Years and Death
Khadijah remained Muhammad’s only partner until her death, remembered in later tradition as the “Year of Sorrow.” Her passing marked a turning point in his life, but her legacy endured through their daughters — especially Fatimah, who became a Whisper of Mercy.Legacy
In Koina, Khadijah is honored not only as Muhammad’s wife but as co-founder of the Mohammedan School. Her nickname al-Ṭāhira reflects her reputation for integrity, and her role as Whisper of Justice ensured that the School carried a practical, economic, and household foundation. She is remembered as the matriarch who transformed trade into covenant, family into school, and justice into lived daily practice.Relationships
