Ali ibn Abi Talib (AH-lee)
Whisper of Stewardship
(a.k.a. Asad Allāh (“Lion of God”), Abū al-Ḥasan (“Father of Hasan”))
Ali ibn Abi Talib was born and raised in Muhammad’s household after the death of his father. From a young age he displayed courage, loyalty, and intelligence, qualities that drew him close to Muhammad both as kin and as student. His marriage to Fatimah further deepened his role as part of the inner household of the Mohammedan School.
Known by the epithet Asad Allāh (“Lion of God”), Ali’s presence in assemblies was marked by bravery and eloquence. His principle as a Whisper was stewardship — the conviction that leadership required integrity, fairness, and care for the vulnerable. He became known for his wisdom in arbitration and his insistence on honesty in public affairs.
As Muhammad’s cousin, son-in-law, and trusted companion, Ali ensured that the School’s teachings remained grounded in both kinship and community responsibility. His voice was crucial in shaping the School’s councils, where debates on justice and equality required clear, reasoned argument.
Ali was assassinated while in Kufa, but his memory as the Whisper of Stewardship endured. Through his children with Fatimah, Hasan and Husayn, his legacy extended into future generations, preserving the principle that stewardship is a sacred trust.
