Farhad ibn Rustam (FAR-hahd ibn ROOS-tahm)

First Voice of Sogdiana (Current)

Farhad ibn Rustam was born in Samarkand, a city where blue-tiled domes and caravan markets still mark the crossroads of civilizations. From childhood he was drawn to both scholarship and conversation. His family were merchants who prized negotiation as much as trade, and it was said that young Farhad could settle disputes over spices or textiles with a patience beyond his years. This gift carried him into Whisper training, where his instructors noted his ability to recall long genealogies of ideas, weaving Persian poetry, Greek logic, and Sogdian proverbs into seamless dialogue.   Now in his late thirties, Farhad serves as First Voice with a presence both regal and approachable. His personal life is rich and layered: he shares a deep union with a fellow Whisper, yet also maintains long-standing ties with a musician from Bukhara and a healer from the steppes. To him, love is not bound by borders, and he often says that the strength of the Accord rests on the same principle as the Silk Road — many paths converging into one. His household is lively, filled with apprentices, travelers, and visiting friends, reflecting his conviction that a home must mirror the world’s plurality.   Beyond council duties, Farhad is devoted to poetry and calligraphy. He recites verses of Rumi and Ferdowsi during public gatherings, but also writes his own aphorisms, which he often leaves unsigned, believing wisdom belongs to no single name. He is a collector of maps, fascinated by how lines on parchment reflect choices of memory and power, and he delights in comparing old routes with new cooperative networks. Those who work with him describe his leadership as patient, adorned with metaphor, and always aimed at reminding others of the greater journey rather than the single step.
