Ari Harro

Mystery & Oddities Society

Aremis Harro (a.k.a. Ari)

Aremis “Ari” Harro functions as the steady, level-headed grounding force within the Mystery & Oddities Society. Practical to a fault, calm under pressure, and unbothered by discomfort, he often takes point in physically demanding or uncertain situations. He isn’t the leader — the MOS has none — but he frequently becomes the *default* decision-maker whenever the group faces something tangible: broken machinery, a collapsed trail, a faulty resonance lantern, or a cliffside that needs climbing.   He’s the one who packs extra rope, checks the weather, and asks whether anyone actually brought food before heading out at dusk. His confidence is quiet, unshowy, and earned. People trust him because he doesn’t make promises he can’t keep.

Background & Upbringing

Ari was raised in a small Zagros highland community where competence is currency and humility is expected. The Harro family is known for producing reliable artisans, seasonal guides, and practical thinkers. Ari’s upbringing was shaped by:
  • long stretches of outdoor work
  • basic engineering and repair skills
  • survival training typical of highland cooperatives
  • a cultural emphasis on self-respect over bravado
  • His surname, *Harro*, traditionally connotes pride in the sense of “uprightness” or “standing firm,” which describes him cleanly.   He enrolled in Caer Affallach’s academy system at 17, where he roomed in cooperatives before eventually drifting into Mush’s orbit.

    Skills & Strengths

Ari is the group’s practical backbone. His strengths include:
  • physical endurance and agility
  • repair and tool-handling skills
  • map-reading and navigation
  • outdoor survival
  • calm decision-making under stress
  • a talent for seeing straightforward solutions others overlook
  • He is rarely dramatic, never panics, and maintains a stoic sense of humor about the group’s collective chaos.

    Weaknesses & Quirks

Ari’s grounded nature comes with limits:
  • He finds theoretical or convoluted explanations tiring.
  • He assumes problems are physical before considering social factors.
  • He’s slightly oblivious to interpersonal undercurrents.
  • He has no patience for over-engineered solutions.
  • His blunt honesty can accidentally bruise feelings.
  • He also has an unexpected soft spot for stray animals — which partially explains why he didn’t object when Munch the ferret decided to adopt them.

    Key Relationships Within the MOS

Min: Ari respects Min’s intellect, even if her explanations sometimes go over his head. She relies on him to implement her ideas in the real world.
India: The two balance each other; she handles conversation, he handles logistics.
Pip: Ari pretends Pip drives him crazy, but he quietly trusts Pip’s offbeat insights.
Mush: Ari often acts as Mush’s quiet shield — gently redirecting him, checking in, making sure he’s okay.
Munch: “I didn’t feed him,” Ari claims, as Munch sleeps inside his jacket.

    Pre-MOS Life

Before joining the Mystery & Oddities Society, Ari was largely focused on vocational studies: engineering basics, cooperative logistics, and applied navigation. The one indulgence he permitted himself was reading serialized travel journals — which seeded his desire for a gap-year journey.   He met the others gradually at school, becoming part of Mush’s expanding circle of houseguests.

Role in the First Case (Black Dog of Tintagel)

Ari was the only member who initially believed the “spectral dog” sightings were explainable. As the case unfolded, he:
  • charted the cliff routes
  • found physical evidence others overlooked
  • prevented Pip from falling into a fissure
  • confronted the smugglers directly
  • rescued Min and India when the fog trapped them
  • His practical approach helped resolve the incident long before the group understood the full picture.

    Post-Case Development

The Tintagel case cemented Ari’s unofficial role: the one who steps forward when problems are concrete. He became the stabilizer of the group — the person they instinctively look toward when anything involves danger, height, mud, machinery, or common sense.

    Later Adaptation Notes

In comic and holo-mation portrayals, Ari is often drawn taller and more imposing than he likely was in reality. Adaptations exaggerate his stoicism for comedic contrast, especially in scenes involving Pip or Munch. However, they preserve the essence of the real Ari: the quiet, competent, unshakeable center of the Munchmen.
