Temple of Bel at Tadmor
Amid the sands of Palmyra, the Temple of Bel once united Semitic, Greek, and Persian deities beneath a single colonnade. Its columns gleamed with gypsum and desert sun, and merchants from every direction prayed beneath its arches.
Scholars regard Tadmor as the first cosmopolitan sanctuary - where theology ceded to philosophy, and trade became communion. Even after the temple’s destruction and later reconstruction, its ruins remained a rallying ground for cultural preservation.
Today, Tadmor’s stones are restored by craftspeople from every federation, working under the principle that heritage is a shared trust. When evening light returns to the columns, it feels as though reason itself is being rebuilt from the desert upward.
