NOURISHMENT
#01: A myth about a legendary food or drink
Conspiracy theory about the true nature of the superserum and the abilities it grants. Written as anti-battlespear propaganda.
#02: A substance known for its unique smell
A resin from woods that grow in the Nightwood, which is covertly involved in producing Ymir-bound superserum.
#03: A profession related to spirituality or philosophy
Experienced elderly homesteaders who give advice, help, and validation to homesteaders clashing with their parents.
#04: A charity dedicated to helping those in need
Not all Homesteaders have proper familial or communal support. So the Children of Ymir gladly jump in with advice and help, so that a new steader can always set up properly.
#05: A ritual related to agriculture
Whenever a homesteader starts up a secondary claim for their offspring, the community gladly jumps in. Setting up the initial shelter and home, as well as the basic greenhouse and other essential infrastructure, is done with entire communities.
#06: A species that feeds through a symbiotic relationship
Smaller wolf-like creatures, up to 2m long. Their size makes Ursa Majors a massive threat to them, so they eagerly benefit from a team-up with Corvus species. The birds warn them of threats and lead them to prey, in return the wolves let the birds scavenge the prey corpses.
#07: A condition you can get from eating specific foods
A layman's term for the various abilities developed due to ingesting the Superserum. This article is from the Battlespears perspective, with a list of all known abilities and instructions to its users on how to get used to them. Will pretend to link to specific detailed articles, with censorship and 'access will be granted on individual basis after conversation with medical staff'.
#08: A delicious staple found on every dinner table
A special mushroom which only grows in near-total darkness, which the Homesteaders have managed to learn to grow. Its fast growth under the right circumstances, plus its stabilizing effect on the soil quality after growing other crops, make it essential to grow. And when prepped in the right way, it is delicious.
ROOTS
#11: An organization rooted in controversial principles
The Science Department is independent and extraterritorial, receiving funding from the government by law. Their neutrality, as well as their monopoly over the superserum, is rather disliked by more and more these days.
#12: A myth surrounding the birth of an important person in your world
Valya Ymirborn, aka Valya Flamekissed, is known for her unnatural intuition. She can justify her actions afterwards, but even then her sudden acts and reaction speed come across as inhuman to many. This is a story told by Defenders with a drink too many, a rumour about how even during her birth, Valya displayed supernatural reaction speed to a dangerous situation.
#13: A character known for their numerous progeny
An AI developer working for the Science Department, who develops many of their scouting drones. Each drone has its own personality and name.
#14: A foundational document for a country, religion, or other organization
The formal charter that establishes the independence of the Science Department on Ymir, as well as on all other Starseed missions.
#15: A garment traditionally associated with a culture
Within the confinements of the First City, chances of a Black Lung infection are small. While some still wear face masks, only those coming back from outside are required to wear them while in isolation conditions. However, outside the First City, the Homesteaders will usually never go without their mask, which they have turned into personal fashion statement. Their usage is such that even the Corvus species have learned to identify Homesteaders based on their masks.
#16: The place of origin of a people in your world
Whelp, I mean, obvious choice given how humanity came from Earth to Ymir.
#17: An ancient tongue from which many common idioms spring
Esperanto is an officla language on Ymir. Homesteaders in particular came from everywhere around the world, so they enjoy using Esperanto rather than English whenever they want to tease outsiders. Even their proverbs are based on Esperanto. They also only speak in Esperanto to the local Corvus species.
#18: A war that resulted in the creation of something new
The First City is a safe haven, home to Terran crops, species and more. To make sure the area had no hidden dangers, it had to be cleared fully. This meant chasing off or killing all the local flora and fauna. The Science Department of course picked a site that came with as little collateral damage as needed, but that doesn't stop its opponents from dramatising the act.
METAMORPHOSIS
#21: A settlement that has been rebuilt several times
Not all projects have been successful on Ymir. It seems fitting that the Homesteaders have gotten in over their heads on occasion, especially due to Ursa Major stampedes. So this would be a claim that failed due to various complications, but still serves well as an advanced scouting position so always is rebuilt.
#22: An ever-changing location that requires its inhabitants to adapt
I mean, if the area near the Nightwood has a settlement repeatedly rebuilt, then that area would fit, no?
#23: A subculture that appeared due to social changes
Whelp, I got my conspiracy theorists which turned into anti-government and eventually gave birth to terrorism. Might as well give them an article, either their own propaganda or a Homesteader thought on them.
#24: A transformation caused by a celestial body
If Ymir was once hit by another planet/object, just like Earth has been, maybe that impacted its orbit. Remnants of the collision could serve for terrain, and conspiracy theorists would love it. Because what if aliens somehow changed this planet and prepared it for us? What if the Battle Spears their superpowers come from the same aliens?!
#25: A formation known for its adaptability
I got two options here. Either emergency medics for when a sickness breaks out, or a subgroup of Battle Spears trained to handle random fights when scouting... Choices, choices. I think I'll go with the subgroup, since Valya is at some point sent along into the wild and has to help wipe out several Ursa Major groups.
#26: A technology invented to prevent or delay a transformation
Diseases, like black lung, need treatment. If you're rather removed from proper treatment, you need something to buy you time. So there this could come in handy.
#27: A ritual that's changed meaning throughout the years
Ymir has a different calendar due to its 25h time and tidal-locked status, and uses fake birthdays for privacy purposes, so some do group birthdays, others rebel, and some do a random unbirthday party because their birthday no longer really feels fitting.
#28: A species that undergoes a metamorphosis
Murder bears! Murder bears! Murder bears! Through Black Lung infections, they go utterly berserk and hyper-aggressive, which results in stampedes that can wreck massive havoc.
FUTURE
#31: A recently created title or honor
There were never supposed to be military medals or decorations on Ymir. Without another country to fight, the Defenders are meant to defend the people, not wage war. Yet when someone makes a massive difference against a terrorist attack, how else can you respond but to honour her? So just as Valya was recruited by the Battle Spears, the military leadership created a decoration and made her the first to receive it.
#32: A building that hasn't been finished yet
In the Fallen Wall Incident, a terrorist strike by treasonous Defenders destroyed part of the thirteenth wall. It is currently undergoing repairs. Additionally, it needs a new construction that will make it less vulnerable to sabotage.
#33: A visionary that changed the course of history
Founder of the kingdom of Lebon, this noble united many others, fought heroically in a rebellion, then led the resulting country with great bravery. And now, with the dam collapsed, he dedicated what resources he could spare to the people, to help them settle the valley.
#34: A new condition unknown in olden times
The superserum has far greater effect on Ymir than it did back on Earth, which serves the Battle Spears well but also has significant political impact.
#35: A cutting edge technology expected to change the future
No idea what I was thinking when I came up with an AI-tool option, when the brainwashing technology is right there. The Courage Program is officially to help mentally prepare people, so they stand fast against danger. In reality, there's some more sinister approaches. This will be a Science Department viewpoint article, as this is a technology they really dislike.
#36: An idealist manifesto published by a movement, political party, or other organization
The Faceshowers and Pillagers have been increasing their conspiracy theories, abusing the fact the government will not go hard against them. Enter a manifesto that tries to paint the government in a bad light.
#37: An organization seen as the next superpower
Senator Brunet is gaining more influence every day. As part of society turns paranoid against the government, others are becoming fed up with how the government refuses to take hard action against the Faceshowers and Pillagers. And the one representing them, catching their support,
#38: A vehicle hailed as the transport of tomorrow
The Science Department heavily depends on properly isolated trucks, for various reasons in environments with all kinds of cross-contamination risks. Also being able to cook in safety without the smell luring in alien critters.
WILD CARDS
#09: A city many people want to visit
Within the valley, the old capital is now overgrown with a massive forest. To figure out more of what is going on, it is important to get here and investigate whatever remains. The recent discovery of intelligent undead in its vicinity, as well as the indication of a mass evacuation due to said undead, make this investigation even more urgent.
#10: A place people aren't supposed to go
A forest with a canopy so thick, that even with Ymir's eternal daylight, this place is always night. This also makes it impossible to scout from the air. It is home to many an Ursa Major group, making it very dangerous a place to visit. Furthermore, wiping out the Ursa Majors could have a massive impact on the ecosystem. As such, venturing here is forbidden and punishable by martial law.
#19: A symbolic building
There are three borders on Ymir. The walls of the First City form the first border. The second is the end of where Homesteaders are allowed to go. Any land outside it is not kept under proper observation and no aid will be provided to anyone venturing there. This border is flagged with long poles, symbolising the end of the reach of humanity on Ymir. The third border is where the explorations have not gone to yet. Each year that third border moves more, but for now, the second remains in place.
#20: A diaspora spread around the world
There are many families that left the Valley before its fall. They took with them limited knowledge, as secrets were well-kept by its leadership. Only limited family stories remain, which the Ravenmight Institute is compiling as much as they can.
#29: An animal celebrity
I'm gonna think of something involving a Corvus (aka alien crow/raven) here, named after Jackdaws basically ergo Jack-oh-wait-she-is-a-girl-Jackeline. Maybe she is known for helping someone out once, I'll think that through.
#30: A job many people aspire to but few achieve
There are a lot of people that'd like to get superpowers, but the Battle Spears have a very strict and number-limited recruiting process. I have the formation / group in an article, from a formal perspective. However, a Homesteader-based article about the profession would contain significantly different facts and perspective.
#39: A resource with an alternative or secret application
Some folks will drink Ursa Major blood as a symbolic way of triumphing over their threat. Meanwhile, it actually is used as a secret incredient to enhance the superserum.
#40: A tool used by a nomadic culture
The Pillagers have to keep on the move, make sure they're not tracked down. As long as they stay out of sight of satellites, their main threat is drones with thermographic vision. Cool Suits allow them to hide their body temperature, so that said drones can't easily spot them.
