Lord Lebon
The Old Country is often called the Kingdom of Lebon, on account of Lord Lebon having been chosen as its leader. But there's plenty who do not agree with the name, mostly the eastern nobles from the Montchild Faction. Lord Lebon is, surprisingly, one of those uncomfortable with said term. This because he feels like it puts him on too much of a pedestal.
Now in the Valley, we use the term Old Country mostly to differentiate between that area and our current home, as the valley may officially fall under the kingdom, kinda, so there has to be a way to distinguish between the two. So do not mistake the usage of said term as a choosing side, but I digress.
Back when the Phekar empire imploded into a succession war, there was a heavy burden on the noble territories that later joined into the kingdom. Heavy taxation and draft led to hunger, made worse by a lengthy drought. Aid was requested, none was given. And then, people fell sick with Fish Fever. Thus, history gave birth to the uprising.
Not many speak of exactly what happened, for the uprising was covertly supported by families that might suffer wrath. Yet somehow, Lord Lebon found his allies, found his troops, and together they rebelled. Their first act was stealing food from forts, before they rode back and provided all they could. While the troops prepared themselves for the retaliatory attack, Lord Lebon also arranged for riverworks that ended up helping resolve the drought.
And as he repeatedly led the other nobles to victory, he also helped engineer ways that allowed the territories to better provide for themselves. When the victory was won, all knew who had played the biggest role. Thus, the other nobles chose him as their leader.
It was Lord Lebon who began preparing for exploring the Valley, all while he spent most of his time still at the front, as even to this day parts of the former Phekar empire wish to get revenge or simply steal our lands. The breaking of the dam and subsequent flood merely served to accelerate his plans. And so here we are, all thanks to his guidance. Let us hope it turns out well in the end.
