Manmosu Islands

"Between the predations of the Imugi and the new regime on Lahat, it is necessary to expand our influence in the south by acquiring the Manmosu Islands."
— excerpt from a strategy recommendation to the Shogun of the Empire of Wamato, circa 3840

The Manmosu Islands are a small archipelago in the Southwestern Region, consisting of eight islands, of which Chowinga is the largest. They are home to the Kizhva people, an ethnic group of humans with no known relations elsewhere in the Great Ring. The archipelago is the westernmost in the region, lying a little more than six hundred miles northwest of Lahat. It is best known for the Zoyot - a breed of pygmy mammoth domesticated by the Kizhva that serves many of the same purposes as horses on other islands of the Great Ring.

Shortly after the Mekongga conquered Lahat in 3838, the Empire of Wamato seized the Manmosu Islands for use as a military outpost. They expelled the Kizhva from Chowinga, forcing them to relocate to the smaller islands of the archipelago, where they have struggled to survive due to overcrowding and limited resources - a situation made worse by an imperial ban on all non-military boats in the area. Even the common name, Manmosu, is a Yanjinese term imposed by the invaders; the Kizhva call their homeland Pimukva.

Points of Interest

The Capana Lighthouse on the island of Pimu is one of the most recently constructed towers in the Ring of Light. The Order of the Lightkeepers had to obtain the Empire's permission to build it, which they achieved only after first gaining the support of the lighthouse Kami of Kojima. They were also granted permission to operate boats for their own support, and the clerics have used this privilege to aid the Kizhva living on Pimu - the two boats allowed to them are crewed largely by Kizhva and acquire far more fish and supplies than the keepers of the lighthouse require, distributing the surplus to the villagers.

While the god of Capana Lighthouse has not yet manifested, some keepers report being seized by a sense of fierce protectiveness for the people of Pimu - a possible sign of the newborn deity's emerging nature. They are careful not to report these sensations to the Yanjin military authorities who rule the island, lest the officials attempt to suppress the god's birth. It is particularly important that the Imperial Reiji remain unaware, as the Kōdō practitioner would be most likely to recognize the threat and move to neutralize it.

Geography

The eight islands of the Manmosu archipelago stretch in a roughly north-to-south line for about one hundred and sixty miles, with the largest island, Chowinga, located near the center. A low, ancient range of extinct volcanoes runs along the center of the chain, the highest peak being Tzchimoos at just over two thousand feet. According to Kizhva tradition, the islands were once connected by land bridges, and it is still possible to cross between several of them via causeways that lie only a few feet underwater at low tide. The terrain is largely grassland, with only a few scattered trees.
