Octant 1 - Zeus (ZAY-oos)

This octant serves as the government center for Olympia. It holds no housing of any sort, dedicated solely to the governance, maintenance, and daily bureaucracy of running a large city.

After the stabilization of the ark-based city, this was one of the first large areas to be built up outside of areas necessary for survival. Each of the founders had a hand in molding this octant and forming the governmental system that would continue to run Olympia well into the future.

Demographics

Government workers may come from any walk of Olympian life but often tend toward the more well to do.

Government

The government of Olympia was modeled, not terribly surprisingly, off of old world democratic systems.

The Council
Most of the day to day business is run by the Olympian Council. This is formed of two representatives from each of the eight Octants and three Gatewardens for an odd number to avoid ties. The Council meets twice weekly to settle any matters of city-level import and to take reports from each of the Octants on any crucial matters. Octant representatives are elected every two years by the workers of that Octant.

Themisian Court
The judicial portion of the government hears and tries crimes as brought forth against the laws of the city. The court also sponsors the training and dispersal of inner-Olympian security forces known as the Oracles. The judges of the Themesian court are selected annually from a large pool of elected candidates but their names are not released to the public. They hold one of thirteen positions named after ancient titans: Dion, Coeus, Crius, Hyperion, Iapetus, Kronos, Thea, Rhea, Themis, Mnemosyne, Phoebe, Oceanus, and Tethys. The judges wear masks and use only these titles in court so that they remain separate from their regular lives to impart decisions that are as impartial as possible.

Cases in the Themisian Court are held before a panel of five judges. Judges may not serve in two consecutive trials or in two trials of the same subject matter. For example, two individuals being tried for the same theft would have two different panels of judges. The Themesian Court is supposed to be impartial - and often is - but that does not always mean all of its members are as upstanding as others.

The Oracles
Despite their name, the Oracles do not have any particular divination ability but they are devoted to keeping the citizens of Olympia on the straight and narrow - or at least they are in the higher security areas. Like more familiar police forces, the Oracles coverage of the city varies greatly at times. The Oracles do enjoy a generally good relationship with the Gate Wardens due to a shared vocation of protection. The emblem of the Oracles is a silver or gold badge with a lidless, all seeing eye.

Defences

“Do not tempt Zeus’ bolt” is a common phrase in this octant. With so many enforcers of the law about, even hardened criminals think twice about mischief in this area. It is rumored that many of Olympia’s martial defenses - weapons and such - are also housed here although the Ares Octant steadfastly denies that claim.

Infrastructure

The Zeus Octant is one of the most well-secured and polished areas of Olympia. Regular presence of Oracles and Gate Wardens here means that crime is extremely low in this area - and even the idea of misbehaving seems to seldom occur. The area comprises several government buildings - all well kept and sleek - and a series of ordered green spaces for breaks or those needing some time in fresh air.

History

Zeus established the Basic Laws of Olympia as one of its first acts as a governing body.
