The Barrens

The barrens is not actually a specific neighborhood but are the places between the more easily identified, cultural epicenters of the other boroughs. These areas, where most of the average citizenry lives, hold no particular cultural or historical touch stones. They are easy to find in the gaps between the more established boroughs - but that often makes the people in them harder to find in the generic blend of humanity and meta-humanity that exists there. The areas are so named by an early and prominent politician that noted “Barren of culture, art, and everything that makes life worth living but home to hundreds of thousands of our most solid citizenry.” It was not the rousing political speech he had hoped for.

Magic in the Barrens

What little magic exists here is as varied as the residents. Most magic users find their ways to other boroughs by inclination.

Demographics

Any and all ancestries can be found here, though trolls and orcs that move in from the Wilds often locate to Barrens spaces.

Infrastructure

Most of the housing in the barrens is solid middle class housing. Think suburbia. There are some poorer sections but generally this is where your average person lives. The areas usually feature basic shopping necessities nearby if there is nothing in the local, nearby borough. Bodegas and small shops are popular.

Guilds and Factions

The Barrens are too widespread for any major factions to develop, though local bars and pubs often have regulars that tend to spend time together.   Barrens Chat
A CB radio club that talk to each over over the freqs. It's full of stupidity, smack talk, and people attempting to provoke others into arguments . People will regularly ask for the location of the latest hangout, code-named "Mankrik's Wife".

History

Most of the Barrens structures were built in the first founding years of the city, pre-printed houses that were put up by the Arc mechanics quickly and easily and have since simply been maintained and updated. They are often homogeneous in structure and appearance though homeowners have customized them over the years.

Architecture

Like the old planned neighborhoods of ancient earth, what most people from the Buroughs don’t like about Barrens-space is that it’s all the same. For some this is a feature, for others, a flaw.
