Gatehome

Gatehome is the district of the Ares Octant that extends from the Outer Wall to about a third of the way through to the Inner Wall of the Octant. Larger than many Boroughs, this area is a massive layout of defenses, checkpoints, chokepoints, walls, turrets, and battlements. While Main Street runs from the Gate straight through to the Hub , every inch of it that passes through Gatehome is under constant watch, surveillance, and covering fire from turrets and manned defenses - not to mention patrolling Rangers. Ostensibly absent are the Oracles who often have no need to come into the area given that no one actually ‘lives’ there and that the Watch handles most of its own business internally.

Magical Culture

Magic in Gatehome is almost always some kind of warrior-magic. It is not uncommon to see adepts and mages using their weapons as magical instruments. It has become so common that it is not unusual to see some manner of pyroblast come out of the end of a shotgun, only for the wielder to rack a shell into the chamber and fire again.   While not a founding document, per se, the ancient legends of Arthur and his Knights had a huge influence on Gatewatch culture and so it is incredibly common to see various magical symbols being used in the vein of swords, shields, and so forth. This even extends to the very not knight-in-shining-armor that is the Gatewatch, with the upper leadership of the Gatewatch, said to number 19 after the founding numbers, bearing ceremonial magic swords that, local legend says, can turn aside any spell cast at the holder.

Founding Inspirations

The founding documents of Gatehome are predominantly military guide books, of which the Gatewatch is always hunting for more. These books, called Field Manuals, are specific guides and “how to” books that were used in military training. Some examples include:
  • FM 7-8 Infantry Rifle Platoon and Squad: A fundamental manual covering the organization, tactics, and procedures for infantry units at the platoon and squad level
  • FM 21-20 Physical Fitness: Focuses on physical training and conditioning for soldiers
  • FM 21-15 Individual Clothing and Equipment: Details the care and use of individual clothing and equipment
  • FM 21-76 Survival, Evasion, and Escape
  • SH 21-76 Ranger Field Operations
  • Demographics

The Gatewatch itself is incredibly cosmopolitan and any variety of people might come through the Gate.

    Infrastructure

Outside of basic amenities for the Gatewatch on duty, Gatehome has little in the way of infrastructure that is not military defenses.

    History

When the Gatewatch was founded in 64 DF, Ranger General Michael Bass made a number of enemies, politically, carving out a section of Olympia for himself and the nascent Gatewatch. It seemed strange, at the time, to carve such a large section of land out for 19 rangers; however, Bass understood that as the city evolved, so too would the Watch. What began as a combination of the Gate and the Watch’s barracks, hence calling it Gatehome, eventually evolved into a layered series of defenses which began with the outer wall and then into a winding series of bulwarks and bastions along Main Street.   While not every attack comes from the Gate, enough of them have that it makes the most sense for that to have been the place where layer after layer of defense was built over time as the city expanded and ‘grew’ into the shoes of the outer Olympian Wall.

    Points of interest

The Last Stand   The Last Stand is a newsstand located at the final checkpoint before the Olympian Gate. The dimensional magic worked into its construction allows it to keep a robust inventory and serve a number of alternate functions on the side. This versatility makes it a mandatory stop for all parties departing or entering Olympia.
