Missions

Although everybody in Olympia is expected to work in some manner, most Olympians don't work a full forty-hour workweek. It's common for people to run errands or handle appointments during the day, and some businesses are only open during certain hours. All that's important is that the work gets done and that someone is available to cover for you.
It is not uncommon for people from various areas of influence to ask for help in completing tasks - some big, some small. These opportunities typically offer pay or favors of some sort and are given to allies or friends or those in need of proving themselves.

Community Service

The main exception to the average job is the Community Service Bulletin Board System. The Community Service program is a popular policy that has its origins in Olympia's Siege Period when many people were too exhausted fighting the sieges to handle the mundane tasks of Olympia. At the time, a lottery was set up so that those who were not actively fighting could be tasked with helping the city and pick up the slack for the fighters who were too busy.
Today, Community Service is a mix of forced jury duty and help wanted ads. They are one time missions that can be created by any citizen of Olympia that needs help. Most Community Service Missions fill in where normal services need help, but other Missions can be more mundane. Depending on the Mission, more than one person can be assigned to help with the Community Service BBS.
Even though Community Service can be involuntary, it isn't without pay, and it can be an ideal supplementary income for those people that are interested. Payment, when it comes in money, is handled completely through the Zeus government and is automatically deposited into the appropriate accounts once the task has been successfully completed. Most Community Service Missions only take a single day to complete, but more difficult Missions can take longer.
Involuntary Community Service is intended to be anonymous and random, but the reality is the bulletin board system hasn't been anonymous or completely random in years, yet it remains popular. Some people regularly get assigned Community Service, while others seemingly never get called or only get called for Missions that boost their public image. The citizen that requests the community service has the ability to choose who is ultimately assigned the Mission, even among volunteers.
Through coded phrases and oddly placed Missions that the average person wouldn't take, the criminals of Olympia also use the Community Service BBS to post Missions for less than legal activities. These Missions are never randomly assigned to people that haven't already taken an underworld Mission, and there's enough mystery in the process that the Oracles have yet to catch on to the illegal activity. Even if they did, the coded phrases would just change.

Relationships

Relationships are ties to NPC contacts and allies. These can be friendly, romantic, or simply an acquaintance. These NPCs are assigned to a specific group, and your relationship with the group is tied with the NPC. At character creation, players are given 20 relationship points that they must spend in at least four different Community Service groups that represent how good your relationship is with someone in that group. This should be someone that your character knows, either from your backstory, or as part of the city's story.
You can also assign yourself a role in Discord for a certain group even if you don't have the relationship to them but are interested in those types of missions. Keep in mind this might lead to some interesting RP about how you found out in the first place. For example, Neo really wants to get into underworld criminal activities but he's just a lowly law clerk. You tag your character for this group in Discord and for the next underworld job, Neo overhears some information that he shouldn't. The storyteller is at discretion to work with you to determine your involvement.
These people are intended to be quest givers and fixers and should be people that your character is familiar with. Sharing a relationship with another player is a good opportunity to create new background ties!

Relationship Points

  • 0: Busted
  • 1-5: Acquaintance
  • 6-10: Close

  •   At 0, your character either doesn't know anyone or you've had a falling out. People in similar areas talk to each other, and attempts to establish a relationship via Downtime suffer a -2 penalty until it reaches at least one point.
From 1-5, your character knows a guy. This can be an old acquaintance, a work friend, or a semi-friendly rival. These people can get you in on their kind of Community Service missions and can also serve as a source of information. Sometimes missions are restricted to only people that they know and are confident will get the job done.
At 6-10 your character is close with someone in that community. When you have a close relationship, the person you know will go out of their way to get insider information on jobs that they wouldn't for the average person. You can also spend relationship points for favors and bonuses that make jobs easier or affect the city. The cost and what you can do is up to the staff member running the scene. Guidance around costs and altering relationships is located in the Storyteller Guide.

    Favor Examples

This is not intended as an exhaustive list of examples. The Storyteller running the mission will determine what favors your relationship is willing to grant based on how many points you're willing to spend and how close your relationship is. Favors are intended to be temporary or single-use in nature, and not part of the reward for the mission.
Favors (or bribes) may be purchased for 500 credits per point. The Storyteller will determine the ultimate cost, and whether the NPC will accept the payment or not.

    Community Service Types

There are broadly twelve different groups of Community Service missions that are posted. Players may volunteer or listen for any unrestricted mission, but may need a relationship with someone within the community for more restricted missions. (Hint: Another player can invite you if the storyteller allows, and this can be an opportunity to raise your relationship.)

Academia and Lore / Ark Runners

The University of Apollo regularly employs teams of volunteer researchers to investigate Horror stories and sends teams of Ark Runners into newly found Arks. Researching rarely involves simply digging through a book, and may mean finding a rare copy that's been lost to time or the source of an oral tradition. Sometimes the University of Apollo will offer new and exciting technology that needs to be tested on unwilling victims eager volunteers.

    Business

Although competition among businesses isn't as cutthroat as in the stories, corporate espionage and sabotage do exist, though not openly. Not all activities are illegal though, as jobs are as varied as there are businesses, like finding rare parts for LOStech machinery or delivering pizza.
    Affiliated NPCs:

    Charities

Members that believe in The Light will often post jobs to help people in the city with no further benefit to themselves. Many see Community Service as a way to encourage good deeds in the city and to have people help their fellow citizens.

    Community Service

This is a catch all tag for those who may want to get pulled into "assigned tasks" at random. This tag is intended for players, not characters or NPCs.

    Gatewatch / The Wilds

The Gatewatch frequently handles most Horrors, but sometimes they need help that can only be found in the citizenry. The Gatewatch are also involved with any job that requires venturing into the Wilds around the city.
    Affiliated NPCs:

    Government

These jobs come from Zeus itself as the primary government bureaucracy in Olympia. Jobs for the bureaucracy can be as mundane as investigating the source of a water leak to persuading people to move so that a new building can be raised. Jobs for the Themesian Courts, Citylink, the Apollo Hospitals are also considered part of the government.
    Affiliated NPCs:

    Magic Community

Small communities of like-minded magic folks like covens, lodges, and orders create jobs that are as varied as its citizens. Jobs for the paranormal in the city can also mean working with intermediaries for the spirits that live here.
    Affiliated NPCs:

    News / Media

News organizations from Hermes are always looking for more information on stories, and new movies in Dionysus are always looking for extras.
    Affiliated NPCs:

    Oracles

Not every crime is solved by the Oracles. Sometimes citizens are assigned cold cases or help out when crime rises and the Oracles can't handle the load.
    Affiliated NPCs:

    Pop Culture

Partygoers in Dionysus or Aphrodite regularly have people run errands and do favors with the Community Service system from walking their dog to picking up snacks from across the city. Escort and protection services for the social elite can also be requested through the Community Service program, though it may take having a high reputation to be chosen.
    Affiliated NPCs:

    Street

People on the streets of the inner octants and the boroughs are always looking for people to help with local problems. Each octant has their own local issues, but word on the street gets around about those people willing to help.
    Affiliated NPCs:

    Underworld

Underworld jobs can be as varied as smuggling goods past the Gatewardens to stealing a precious piece of art to outright assassination.
