Octant 8 - Hades (HAY)

The Hades Octant is heavily industrial with pockets of scenic parks and memorials on the edges. It processes and recycles almost all of the raw resources and waste for Olympia and turns it into bulk ingredients that Demeter and Hephaestus use to turn into finished goods while also powering the rest of Olympia on recently discovered LOSTech solar generators that scientists of today have yet to fully understand.   The most recognizable feature in Hades is the Helepolis where waste and raw materials are recycled into intermediate goods ready for manufacture for the Hephaestus Octant and fertilizer for use by the Demeter Octant. Many intermediate goods like ingots of metals and spools of plastic are produced for use in Hephaestus while fertilizers are produced for many crop needs - nitrogen rich soil for some crops and potassium rich soils for others, as well as more specialized nutrients as required.   The Hades Octant is also the primary water and waste treatment part of the city, with modern techniques invented in the past century that avoid noxious smells and hazardous materials, while creating a healthy and clean source of water that can even be distributed all the way to the boroughs.   The final purpose for the Hades Octant is to provide a resting place for the deceased for many of Olympia’s citizens. Although it's said that the Ancients were typically buried in the ground with stone monuments dedicated to their memory, Olympia wasn't built with that infrastructure in mind — there are simply too many people. Instead, most dead are brought to the Helepolis in Hades where their bodies are recycled for the next generation, with a place on local memorial walls dedicated to their memories.

Demographics

Orcs and trolls are common in Hades. Death finds everyone eventually, but their strength is a benefit for many of the industries here. Unfortunately, this doesn’t help those ancestries’ image any, as very few people want to live near garbage and heavy machinery.

Defences

Roving gangs that seek to protect their territory are the primary defenders of Hades, and even the Oracles are reluctant to venture too far into the shifting labyrinth of barbed wire and tin sheets that make up the deeper slums. The homeless find shelter here, serving as a vast spy network, and rumored dangers travel quickly across the Octant.

Industry & Trade

Hades’s primary trade is in the intermediate goods, power, water, and fertilizer it produces from the waste and recycled materials that are brought into the octant, but Apollo is always researching new and more efficient uses of its material.

Infrastructure

There are two warring forces in Hades: the upscale parks and scenic memorials of the outer edges used primarily by the wealthy, and the garbage, recycling, and power facilities of inner Hades that are necessary for Olympia to thrive. There aren’t many amenities in Hades. Instead, large slums and frequent ramshackle shelters are built from whatever is available or thrown away.

Guilds and Factions

The gangs of Hades are constantly shifting, with names changing as often as their members. There are few constants, but tradition and fear protect the Undertakers known as the Ferrymen.   The Ferrymen are not a guild or a faction, per se, but the people charged with bringing the dead to the Helepolis. Nobody messes with the black carriages and hearses of the Ferrymen, both out of respect for the fallen and the very legitimate fear that they will be tossed in after the next dead body. Fear of disease and the disgust of people who handle dead bodies keep even the bravest gang member at bay.

History

The original founders of the Hades Octant are unknown, but much of the beginning infrastructure was built by Hephaestus itself during the early “boot up” process. The octant was built up around the @Helepolis and grew as the needs of Olympia grew. Early waste processing and power generation were all handled by the Helepolis, but as the city grew and its demands grew with it, the Helepolis couldn’t keep up with the need, leading to brown outs and excess trash piling up.
