Guidelines for visitors of the Royal Palace

All you need to know before visiting the Royal Palace so as to avoid offending anyone and ending on the gallow!

  • South wing: The public wing for visitors, with reception salons for royal soirées, an official dining room, and a throne room for receiving foreign dignitaries.
  • East wing: His Majesty's private wing, forbidden from access without his express permission.
  • West wing: The wing of the government and Royal Council. Accessible with a guide for individuals with an appointment.
  • Royal gardens: Gardens with promenade paths, a small lake, parterres of flowers, fountains, statues, and small copses of tree with intimate seating areas for private conversations.
  • Bridge: In the tower between the West and South wings, a bridge links the Royal Palace to the Royal Mathematicians' headquarters, but it is only accessible to His Majesty, Royal Councilmen, and Royal Mathematicians.

    Etiquette for visiting

  • Once you arrive at the palace, ask a footman to guide you to the intendant's office.
  • Do not linger and wander around unaccompanied.
  • Once your business at the palace is finished, leave immediately.
  • If you have been invited to attend a salon or soirée, stay in the area open to the guests. Accept food and drinks only after your social superiors have been served, and only start eating after they have also done so.
  • Do not sit without the permission of your social superiors. If you are seated but the number of seats is limited and a social superior arrives, offer them your seat.
  • Do not speak with anyone you have not been officially introduced to. Do not speak to your social superiors before they address you.
  • Always address everyone by their proper titles unless given express permission to do otherwise.

    Special rules for meeting His Majesty

  • When in the presence of His Majesty, always bow deeply and do not rise until given express permission.
  • Always address His Majesty as “Your Majesty”; “ sire” is a title reserved for individuals close to him.
  • Never sit in the presence of His Majesty.
  • Never turn your back on His Majesty; instead, exit the room by walking backwards.
  • Never speak out of turn, and even when given permission to address His Majesty, always be highly aware of your words.
