Clippable Devices

Definition: A clippable device is an ensemble device made up of separate devices (called "cubes") built to be able to be "clipped" together. The difference to simply piling a few independent devices together is that there are no adaptations necessary to make the cubes work well together. The entire system was created so that the adaptations are pre-included and that any new cubes can be added to form any ensemble.

When clippable devices were first invented, each device that was clipped together was in the shape of a cube for easy clipping. While this is no longer always the case, the name has stuck. For example, battle staves have been adapted to fit the clippable technology, with the staves made hollow so that cubes can be clipped to them.

Interest:

1. Adapting any two devices together requires a huge amount of mathematics, and adding more devices to the mix complexifies the equations in an exponential manner. Clippable devices were therefore a revolutionary invention that allowed for the mass production of simple to semi-complex customisable devices.
2. The interest of this customisation is that it allows for each device to be adapted to their users' magic, as when this is not the case the device cannot be used, or in rare cases can even break, potentially with a dangerous and spectacular explosion.

Clippable devices were invented during the Third Aquatirian War by a group of Royal Mathematicians and military men in Lernée. They included Councilman de Crancé (then a general) and His Majesty King Vendelin de Liancourt (then a young mathematician). The concept of clippable devices was invented a long time before the war, but after the assassination of our queen by Aquatio, the development of the devices was rushed in under a year in a remarkable feat of ingenuity and collaboration.

Before the invention of clippable devices, the weapons used by the army were of a limited variety. Master craftsmen had to be specialised in the making of at most a handful to ensure their quality, and their creation was slow, as each weapon had to be painstakingly adapted to its user.   Clippable devices allowed for a huge diversification of weapons and for the creation of our modern army: each modern Milaran battalion is focused in the use of one weapon and of the perfect tactics that go with it. The overall range gives our army much more flexibility and capacity for adaptation. Not to mention that each individual weapon in the end of its perfect user is so much better than that wield by our enemies.   Today, countries neighbouring Milara know about the principle behind clippable devices, but none have been able to redevelop the mathematics behind them. They are therefore a secret we guard very closely and a favourite target of spying by Aquatirian diplomats and other foreigners in Lernée. Each Milaran citizen has to do their duty!

Thanks to clippable devices, a huge number of devices helping in every day life can now be mass produced, thus decreasing their prices and bringing them within reach of the majority of Milaran citizens. The type of devices available increases every day as our mathematicians develop new cube designs for our factories!   Most popular device: a cooker that perfectly control the temperature, pression and mixing of each of the different ingredients it contains, and even allowing for different temperature at different point of a piece of meat.
