Guide to the Royal council

The Royal Council is the body with the most power and influence in Milara right after His Majesty King Vendelin de Liancourt. As clamours regarding the nomination of a potential new councilman are rising, let us look back at its role and its composition.

Role

Officially, the role of the Royal Council is to advise His Majesty in governmental affaires, for Magic is Might and the most powerful individuals have unique views that can benefit the entire society. Unofficially, the Council serves to canalise the rivalries of the most powerful individuals in the kingdom by letting them influence its government.

Recruitment

Members are officially named by the king. Anyone with strong magic who has distinguished themselves in war or in the duelling arena has a claim to a seat in the council. Unofficially, if the king refuses to name powerful individuals, they can seize a seat by themselves by defeating a current holder.

Numbers

There is no fixed number of councilmen. However:
  • too few councilmen risks leaving powerful individuals unsatisfied and fomenting a coup.
  • too many councilmen leaves the most powerful of them upset that they are not standing out enough compared to what they think they are due, causing them too to rebel.

    Potential new members

    Verteuil

Champion Dueller Florent Verteuil has claimed 9 victories in the Classic Duelling Championship and was given as the next Councilman. However, what was to be his 10th win in the Arena was instead his disgrace, when coincidentally the scandal of his potion-taking during duels was revealed right in the middle of the championship final!   Many are saying that he has no chance of getting his 10th win now that new anti-cheating measures are in place in the Arena. But who will win then? New blood with young Champion Olivier who won by default last year? Or a returning Champion like Joinville who had 8 wins under his belt before Verteuil's arrival on the scene?

The fact that they can just duel a council member if the king doesn't name them as a council member tickles me for some reason. There must be a whole mess of seething politics in that group.
