Weaponry
Firearms are the preeminent weapon of Duurn, used by both military forces and civilians. The Last War revolutionized military strategy and technology, ending the days of cavalry sabres and bayonet charges. While, modern militaries may still equip soldiers with bayonets or other melee weapons, they are viewed first as tools then as close-quarter weapons should all else fail.
Most militaries equip their soldiers with bolt-action rifles, with submachine guns and shotguns issued as specialized weapons, and semi-automatic sidearms. Grenades are commonly given to soldiers fighting on the front lines, though they are not often carried around outside of the trenches. Most soldiers are equipped with tools that can double as close-quarters weapons, such as trench knives, shovels, and hatchets. All of this of course varies widely across the world.
Game Mechanics
Broadly, modern firearms in Duurn are tech level 6, but many locations are still in tech level 5. Even in the TL 6 regions, plenty of people still use TL 5 firearms. In game terms, characters from a TL 6 society will not receive a penalty for using TL 5 firearms. However, those from TL 5 (or lower) societies will generally receive penalties for using TL 6 firearms. The rules for firearms and shooting in the High-Tech book are generally in play (in addition to the rules for ranged combat and firearms from the Basic Set), with the exception of the "How to Treat Your Gun" rules (p79-81). The "How to Treat Your Gun" rules may be used for additional stakes in survival situations, if that would be fun and not just annoying. Most of the rules added from the High-Tech book just give additional options to players that want to delve deeper into shooting, as well as some ideas for how to handle specific and less common situations.
