Harpoon Gun
This smoothbore, muzzleloading harpoon gun was the most common model used by late 13th- and early 14th-century whalers. Some are mounted on naval whaling vessels, but many were pintle-mounted on a gondola hanging beneath an aerostat, from which a gunner could fire into the ocean. Whaling aerostats are designed to float in water, to prevent a harpooned whale from escaping by descending deeper into the ocean.
The gun has twin caplocks (in case one fails due to the harsh saltwater environment), protected by a hinged brass cover when not in use, and fires a 4.5'-long barbed harpoon attached to a 60-yard 1" rope.
