Mechanus
Mechanus is the Outer Plane of absolute, universal law—a vast, cosmic engine where reality turns with unerring precision. The plane consists of a seemingly infinite array of interlocking, rotating cogs, each the size of a continent or larger, spinning slowly through an endless void. Every cog spins at a fixed rate, perfectly timed with all others, creating a harmonious, mechanical rhythm that permeates the entire plane. Time in Mechanus is measured to the nanosecond, and everything exists according to its designated function.
Mechanus is a plane of rigid stability, where the very fabric of the realm enforces structure, predictability, and purpose. The laws of physics and magic operate here with flawless consistency. There is no weather, no natural disasters, no decay or growth beyond that which has been permitted by design. Structures on the cogs vary—from cities of gleaming metal and crystal to labyrinthine bureaucratic archives—but all are laid out with perfect symmetry and balance.
Each cog has its own gravity, allowing inhabitants to walk comfortably on either face, and some rotate horizontally while others spin at various oblique angles. Yet, despite this apparent complexity, every cog’s movement is synchronized, ensuring no collisions and no deviation from the divine plan of the plane’s operation.
Mechanus represents pure, neutral law, untainted by good or evil. It is the ideal of balance, structure, and harmony, where justice is blind, cause yields inevitable effect, and every being has a role—whether they know it or not. Here, intention matters less than adherence to process; morality is secondary to order.
To visit Mechanus is to experience a realm where everything has its place, and nothing occurs without purpose. For the lawful, it is paradise—predictable, fair, and safe. For the chaotic, it is a prison made of logic and metal, where even a thought out of line might grind against the turning gears of the multiverse. Mechanus is the embodiment of cosmic order—precise, impartial, and inescapable.
Fauna & Flora
- Inevitables, constructs born of Mechanus, enforce the laws of reality and punish those who defy cosmic order—especially those who cheat death, violate contracts, or subvert universal principles.
- Modrons, the geometric, clockwork servants of order, act as the plane’s primary denizens and workers. They carry out tasks on a vast bureaucratic scale with mechanical obedience, managing the plane's infrastructure and ensuring that the great machine of Mechanus functions flawlessly.
- At the center of it all stands (or rotates) Primus, the One and Prime, the deific embodiment of law. Primus issues commands in perfect logic, shaping Mechanus and its agents to maintain the balance of law throughout the multiverse.
