Limbo
Limbo is the Outer Plane of absolute, unshaped chaos—a formless expanse where matter and energy constantly churn, clash, and dissolve in a state of endless transformation. It is a realm without rules or stability, where reality itself is fluid, and the only law is change. In Limbo, nothing is fixed unless willpower or magic makes it so, and even that may not last.
The environment of Limbo is a maelstrom of ever-shifting elements: rivers of fire twist into vines of ice before evaporating into clouds of lightning; chunks of land coalesce from the void only to melt into acid rain; air thickens into stone, then dissolves into shimmering fog. There is no sky, no ground, no orientation—only an endless, shifting sea of primordial potential, where existence itself is unfinished and ever rewriting.
Gravity is fickle, direction is meaningless, and time is erratic—yet somehow still moves forward. Navigation through Limbo is nearly impossible without strong intent or magical guidance. A creature who surrenders to the chaos risks being consumed or changed, their form and mind eroded by the instability.
In this shapeless realm, willpower is survival. A creature with sufficient focus can impose their own reality upon the swirling chaos, shaping it into solid land, breathable air, shelter, or even tools and structures. But the moment that focus lapses, the chaos reclaims its domain. This act of creation is most often seen in the githzerai, who have mastered the mental discipline necessary to build and maintain great monasteries and cities that resist the plane's entropy.
Limbo is not a place for the weak of will or the orderly of mind. It is a canvas of chaos, a raw sea of potential waiting for a mind to give it shape. To survive here is to master one’s own thoughts, to balance adaptability with inner stability. Those who thrive in Limbo are either wholly unbound or entirely self-contained—either part of the madness or immune to it.
Ultimately, Limbo reflects the wild freedom of the multiverse: boundless, unpredictable, and dangerous—yet rich with endless possibility for those bold enough to shape it.
Fauna & Flora
- Githzerai are the dominant inhabitants of Limbo, carving out bastions of order amidst the madness. Their floating strongholds are held together by sheer mental strength, guarded by psychic discipline, and serve as training grounds for monks and philosophers of inner balance.
- Slaadi, frog-like beings of pure chaos, also dwell here. Born of the plane's essence, they represent chaos incarnate—evolving spontaneously, living by impulse, and spreading entropy wherever they go.
- Limbo is also home to spontaneously created anomalies, fragmentary demiplanes, and rogue constructs of thought and dream that coalesce and vanish without warning.
