Cania
Cania, the eighth layer of the Nine Hells, is a realm of eternal ice, blizzards, and deathly silence, where unrelenting cold is both a weapon and a ward. The land is entombed in glacial sheets, carved by razor-edged winds and storms so fierce they can flay flesh from bone in moments. Unlike other frozen planes that may contain beauty in their cold, Cania is merciless, bleak, and utterly inhospitable, reflecting the cruel, calculating nature of its ruler.
Cania embodies cold intellect, ambition without compassion, and the crushing weight of desolation. It is the plane of scheming power, where emotion is frozen away, and calculated evil thrives. Unlike the wild fury of Phlegethos or the decay of Maladomini, Cania's evil is disciplined, remote, and chillingly efficient.
The ice is symbolic—not just of the environment, but of the emotional emptiness of its ruler and his plans. There is no warmth, no loyalty, no mercy—only power, preserved in frost.
To walk Cania is to face hopelessness solidified into landscape. The ice never melts, the storms never stop, and survival itself is a transgression. This layer is the penultimate test of will, a crucible for those whose ambition must either burn through the cold—or be extinguished forever.
Geography
Cania stretches as an endless expanse of black ice, jagged mountains, frozen seas, and bottomless crevasses. No warmth survives here. The surface constantly shifts from earthquake-like cracking as massive glaciers grind together. Snow never falls gently; instead, it scours the land in the form of hurricane-force gales, driving diamond-hard shards of frost across the terrain.
The sky is a deep, starless void, illuminated only by the ghostly glow of auroras—cold light with no warmth. Occasional flashes of blue-white lightning crackle in silence, visible through blinding flurries. Most of the realm lies in frozen darkness, untouched by sun, fire, or comfort.
Fauna & Flora
Cania is ruled by Mephistopheles, an archdevil of immense magical power and intellectual superiority. He resides within Nessus’ twin: Mephistar, a towering citadel of black ice built atop a moving glacier. Mephistopheles is a master of arcane secrets and manipulation, and his dominion reflects his chilling detachment and precision.
Cania is populated by:
- Ice devils (gelugons) who patrol the wastes in militarized, disciplined phalanxes.
- Lesser devils encased in magical bindings, enslaved to serve Mephistopheles' will.
- Wretched souls frozen into walls or lost in the ice storms, suffering endlessly.
- Elementals of cold, twisted into infernal servitude.
Even high-ranking devils fear being sent here as punishment, for Cania offers no reprieve—only isolation and torment through cold.
