Pazunia: The Plain of Infinite Portals

The Plain of Infinite Portals is the first layer of the Abyss, also known as Layer 1: Pazunia. It serves as the gateway to the rest of the Abyss’s infinite depths—a bleak and blasted wasteland that stretches endlessly in all directions, scarred by pits, cracks, and craters that plunge downward into the lower layers. Each of these yawning abysses is a portal to another layer of the Abyss, making the Plain of Infinite Portals a chaotic crossroads of horror, violence, and corruption.

The land itself is a barren, blood-colored expanse, covered in dust, bone, and jagged stone. The sky overhead is a sickly, shifting haze—reddish or gray, sometimes roiling with storm clouds or black smoke, pierced occasionally by lightning or foul winds. The terrain is broken and uneven, with vast chasms and cliffs giving way to yawning pits that descend into shadow. Some are mere fissures; others are immense, miles wide, ringed with crude structures, altars, or the twisted remains of demon war camps.

Each pit leads to a different layer of the Abyss, and there is no discernible pattern or order to their destinations. The Plain of Infinite Portals is not a map—it is a maze of gateways, a cruel mockery of structure in a plane that abhors it. Many who descend a portal never return, swallowed by the horrors that lie beyond. Others are forcibly dragged into the pits by demons, cultists, or worse.

The plain is home to countless demons, from lesser hordes to powerful fiends that use it as a staging ground for war, ambushes, or dark rituals. It is also one of the few Abyssal layers where mortals may attempt to enter or exit—often through great effort, terrible risk, or the guidance (or manipulation) of infernal entities. At times, demon lords send their minions to patrol or guard the edges of specific pits, fighting over access, dominion, or sacrificial offerings.

Towering above the chaos in certain regions are the black fortresses and twisted ziggurats of powerful demon lords—most notably Pazuzu, the corrupted lord of this layer, whose influence radiates over much of the plain. His watchful servants often spread wings across the dust-laden skies, commanding flocks of demons and sowing fear with whispers and winds.

In essence, the Plain of Infinite Portals is not just a location—it is an invitation and a threat. It lures the ambitious, the desperate, and the damned with the promise of passage, only to greet them with madness, betrayal, and descent into the unimaginable. It is the threshold of the Abyss, where all horrors begin, and where the path downward is never hard to find—but never safe to take.
