Nessus
Nessus, the ninth and deepest layer of the Nine Hells, is a realm of terrifying majesty and profound dread—a plane of endless chasms, jagged cliffs, and shadowed fortresses, where the very landscape seems to conspire with the will of its master. It is here that Asmodeus, the Lord of the Nine, rules supreme, seated at the center of a cosmic hierarchy of tyranny and control.
Nessus is the seat of ultimate tyranny, where power is absolute and eternal. It is not a chaotic battlefield like Avernus, nor a decaying ruin like Maladomini—it is perfect, cold, and merciless, a place where every stone serves a purpose and every action is calculated.
Here, evil does not rage—it rules.
To glimpse Nessus is to understand the final consequence of infernal ambition: not madness, but mastery. Not rebellion, but dominion. Not destruction, but enslavement, forever.
Geography
Nessus is a labyrinthine expanse of vast, hellish trenches and deep, spiraling pits, each miles wide and unfathomably deep. These chasms slice through the crust of the plane like wounds in reality, their walls lined with blackened stone, crumbling steps, and gargantuan fortress-citadels embedded into the sheer cliffsides. Some pits are volcanic and molten, others frigid and silent, but all exude a palpable aura of menace and despair.
Bridges of twisting iron, bone, or infernal magic span gaps where needed, often riddled with traps or guarded by powerful devils. Cavernous networks stretch beneath the surface, connecting the layer’s hidden vaults, sanctums, and ancient, forbidden archives of infernal knowledge.
The fortresses of Nessus are not merely strongholds—they are symbols of authority, places of ritual and reckoning. Each is a fortress-prison, torture chamber, or command center, often built directly into the cliffs or hanging over bottomless abysses. These citadels house:
- Pit fiends of immense power, who act as generals, inquisitors, or keepers of arcane lore.
- Loyalist archdevils and dukes, those who serve Asmodeus directly and jealously guard their status.
- Souls of the damned, chained in silence or worked into infernal machinery.
Every structure pulses with infernal energy, powered by the essence of contracts, souls, and the raw law of Hell itself.
Localized Phenomena
At the layer’s heart lies Malsheem, Asmodeus’s fortress-palace—the largest fortress in the multiverse, carved from a singular mass of obsidian-like stone, bristling with spires and towers that pierce the dark skies of Nessus. It is said to hold countless vaults, eternal prisons, and libraries of infernal law and prophecy. Only the most favored devils and fiends may tread its halls and survive.
Asmodeus himself is a being of deific cunning and absolute authority, the embodiment of law twisted into tyranny, and evil refined into order. His presence warps the very layer, and his will is unchallengeable within Nessus.
