Malbolge

Malbolge, the sixth layer of the Nine Hells, is a realm of nightmarish instability and relentless torment, where the land itself rebels against those who dare tread upon it. Once a jagged mountainscape and later transformed into a titanic, crumbling slope of debris and ruin, Malbolge now exists as a massive, ever-shifting escarpment, riddled with landslides, avalanches, and bone-shattering terrain. Nothing is stable for long, and everything about the layer is designed to oppress, punish, and disorient.

Malbolge represents the perversion of structure, where order exists only to serve cruelty and chaos is harnessed as a weapon of torment. It is a place where authority is ever-changing, where nothing is trustworthy, and where power is always unstable—a reflection of those who seek dominion through manipulation, deception, and sheer will to survive amid the ruin.

Geography

Malbolge appears as an endless mountainside, slanting at an uncomfortable and sometimes deadly angle. Stone blocks the size of castles roll slowly or violently tumble down the slopes, crushing all in their path. The very rock is treacherous—oozing filth, sprouting jagged metal, or screaming with the voices of the damned. Entire structures may tilt, sink, or be swallowed by the churning earth without warning.

The sky overhead churns with sickly hues—green, violet, and bloodred—swirling in toxic clouds that rain down acid or necrotic ash. Grotesque, unnatural growths dot the land: cancerous towers, twisted fortresses, and organic ridges that appear to be made of living tissue fused with rock and metal. This plane has been scarred by its ever-changing rulership, bearing the marks of both divine punishment and infernal vanity.

Fauna & Flora

  • Pain devils, corrupt bureaucrats, and sadistic inquisitors are common among Glasya's court.
  • Petty tyrants and exiled nobles from other layers often seek refuge or patronage here, navigating a treacherous social hierarchy ruled by blackmail, betrayal, and shifting alliances.
  • The damned who are sent here often labor endlessly trying to climb the slope, only to fall, die, and rise again.
  • The terrain itself punishes stagnation or defiance, crushing those who rest too long or fail to heed its shifting fury.

History

Malbolge has a cursed history of rulers:

  • Once ruled by Moloch, a mighty archdevil whose cruelty and strength defined the plane. He was cast down by Asmodeus for defying his will.
  • Later, the layer fell into the hands of Malagard the Hag Countess, whose sheer magical might and terrifying cunning shaped the land. Upon her mysterious destruction or ascension—accounts vary—her body itself merged with the layer, forming much of the terrain.
  • Today, Glasya, the daughter of Asmodeus, rules Malbolge. A cunning manipulator and ambitious tactician, Glasya oversees the layer from a fortress-palace built into the crumbling slope itself, commanding legions with both guile and iron rule. Her reign reflects a veneer of decadent sophistication over a foundation of chaos and cruelty.
