Mātaatua
Most sacred tribe of Māuikura, they are said to be direct descendants of Maui. Protectors of the tomb of Maui, once per year they open the door of the tomb on Hakatū island, the day of Maui’s death, and all the Waka meet to celebrate the Matariki, starting the New Year.
History
Mātaatua is known for its journey to the Bay of Plenty, where it landed at Whakatāne. The waka's arrival is marked by the bravery of their leader, Maui, who is said to have saved it from drifting back to sea, saying, "Kia tū tama wahinē" ("Let me act like a man").
