Balthro

For some they may be a person's best friend. For others they inspire fear and terror. Domesticated they have become people's pets, or even pull snow sleds, or perform all sorts of other tasks. But in the wild, Balthros can be ferocious and sly pack hunters. If you are alone in the middle of the woods at night, you should beware. They may already be surrounding you. If you hear their howls, you should run. Though you might not make it very far.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Balthros are large quadrupedal canine creatures with a broad snout, small triangular ears and short torso, and a long tail. They are slender and powerfully built with a deeply descending rib cage, a sloping back, and a muscled neck. Their legs are longer than that of Abyson, allowing it to move swiftly and to overcome deep snow. Their head is large and quite heavy, with a wide forehead, strong jaws, and a long, blunt muzzle. Their teeth are also heavy and large, much more so than Abyson.

Biological Traits

They have a remarkable ability to hide, with some thinking they have a sort of stealth ability.

Genetics and Reproduction

Balthros are monogamous and mated pairs are usually for life. If one of the pair dies, another mate is generally found pretty quickly. Gestation lasts around 1 and a half to 2 months, and a litter can have anywhere from 4 to 14 pups. The pups are born blind and deaf. They will begin to see and hear around 8 to 12 days. After three weeks, the pups will leave the den for the first time.

Growth Rate & Stages

Balthros will become mature around 2 years of age.

Ecology and Habitats

Balthros live in forest, inland wetlands, shrublands, grasslands, arctic tundra, pastures, deserts, and rocky peaks on mountains.

Dietary Needs and Habits

They are pack hunting animals and will prey on any other animals, including Drarin, Ramulus, even taking down prey as large as Elephanci.

Behaviour

Balthros are sly pack hunting animals. When they catch a scent of a good meal, they will not stop chasing it until it tires out, or they will surround and ambush the prey. They are also territorial and will generally establish territories far larger than is necessary for them to survive, in order to assure a steady supply of prey.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Balthros are very social animals. There are packs and lone wolves, with lone wolves mostly being temporary as they move from one pack to another. The Balthro's basic social unit is the nuclear family, with a mating pair being accompanied by their offspring. The average pack size can be anywhere from five to eight.

Domestication

Balkthros are notoriously easy to domesticate, on par with Cheetorex, and have been domesticated for generations. It is said that all that you need is to show the Balthro that you are the alpha. Although that can often be easier said than done of course.

Uses, Products & Exploitation

Many people will use Balthros to guard their homes or simply have them as pets. Others, in the Arctic regions, will have them pull snow sleds and caravan across the snowy plains.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

They are widely found all over the world, in Highwind, Atlantea, Almahna, Olympus, Arctica, and even Gothica. The only place they can not be found in the wild is the Quatrica Islands.

Average Intelligence

They can be pretty intelligent animals and are easily trained when domesticated.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Their sense of smell is amongst the best in the Mystimon kingdom.
