Ramulus
Ramulus are a common Mystimon in the Highwindian Mountains, as well as all of Highwind, and found no where else in the world. They are commonly used by the Vikarahn and Cowins of Highwind as beasts of burden, carrying supplies and the like up the Deathraw Passage, a treacherous passage named for all of the deaths have have occurred there. However these creatures have shown a remarkable ability to climb the passage without much issue, even able to detect landslides and avalanches before they occur. They are often even kept for their wool, meat, and milk by the people of Highwind.
Basic Information
Anatomy
They are quadrupedal creatures with large rounded horns on their heads. They are covered in a thick fabric material called wool that protects them from the freezing cold temperatures of Highwind. They stand on four hooved feet that are especially adapted to the mountains.
Biological Traits
They are able to emit ice shards from the tips of their horns like missiles.
Genetics and Reproduction
Ramulus live in large herds and typically do not follow a single alpha male. Instead, before the mating season, or rut as it is called, the males attempt to establish a dominance hierarchy to determine access to females for mating. They do so through horn clashing competitions, though not exclusive to this. Sometimes these competitions have devolved into outright combats with them firing ice shards at one another. This in turn can cause avalanches and rockslides, making the mountains especially treacherous during this time.
Female Ramulus have a six month gestation. The peak of the rut begins in Endora or Raanu, with one, but rarely two, lambs born in the following Elzrava or Debrial.
Ecology and Habitats
The Ramulus of Highwind can range from alpine meadows, to mountain slopes, and foothill country near rugged, rocky cliffs and bluffs. It is thought that during the last Ice Age, some thousands of years ago, Ramulus evolved and adapted to moving through deep snow. As a result they have spread across the continent.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Biological Cycle
During the dry season, the Ramulus will migrate further up the mountains, while in the wet season, they will migrate back down the mountains.
Behaviour
They tend to be gentle animals but territorial and highly defensive of their lambs.
Additional Information
Social Structure
Ramulus live in large herds, and as described above, they typically do not follow a single leader Ramulus.
Domestication
Many Vikarahns and Cowins keep them as livestock on farms and ranches.
Uses, Products & Exploitation
Vikarahn and Cowin farmers keeping them as livestock will use them for a variety of purposes, such as for their wool and their hide for clothing and other things, their milk, and for of course their meat.
Some also use them as beasts of burden to carry their wares and supplies up the mountain slopes, such as to Snowtop City
Geographic Origin and Distribution
They are only found in Highwind, where they range across the entire continent.
Average Intelligence
Many have considered these to be dumb animals, but recent observations may suggest that they are more intelligent than we originally thought. Perhaps smart enough to know they are being called 'dumb animals' and to take offence to that.
