Polarex

Polarex are bear Mystimon which range across the arctic and subarctic regions. For years it has been debated whether they are related to Grizzlus, since Doctor Ivan Sanderson first proposed the theory back in the 1300's. Many see too many differences between the two to believe that they could be related, while others can see a possible resemblance. In any case, Polarex are a large part of the Vikarahns' culture in Highwind, as well as for the Frostelvan of Arctica. One should be careful of approaching these carnivorous creatures, lest you become their next meal.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Both Polarex and Grizzlus are quadrupedal with thick muscled or fat fore and hind limbs. But where they are different, the differences are rather subtle. Polarex have black skin and white fur, and have a thicker layer of fat which protects them from the cold weather. They also have a narrower skull, longer neck, and lower shoulder hump. Their teeth are shaper and more adapted to cutting and shredding into meat, and their paws are larger and allow for walking on ice and paddling through the water.

Biological Traits

Polarex are able to breathe a cloud of frost and mist that will freeze a person solid in seconds.

Genetics and Reproduction

Polarex mating takes place on sea ice and during the spring, particularly around the month of Conflee. During this time, males will often travel in winding and twisting paths reducing the change of encountering other males while still allowing them to eventually find a female, as the movements of females remain linear.

After mating season, the female will build up fat layers to sustain herself and her cubs. When Polarex hibernate, they will finally give birth to their young, around the end of Endora. During the fall months, they will build maternity dens in which to hibernate and give birth in. Around late Maryve to early Vedoraal, they will emerge from their dens and their cubs are grown enough to walk with them.

Growth Rate & Stages

Polarex Evos into Klaugiak.

Ecology and Habitats

Polarex for the most part live close to the ocean and on sea ice, around the arctic regions, and depend on aquatic ecosystems.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Polarex are carnivorous creatures, feeding mainly on Atre and Medan living in the arctic regions.

Behaviour

They are a predatory species, feeding mainly on aquamarine species like Atre and Medan, and can be very aggressive, particularly when it comes to defending their young.

Additional Information

Social Structure

For the most part Polarex are solitary creatures, aside from mothers with their cubs and mating pairs. However, they have been found forming somewhat stable alliances, traveling, resting, and playing together. Though males are less tolerant of one another during mating season.

Uses, Products & Exploitation

Many people living in arctic regions, such as Vikarahn, Cowins, Frostelvan, and humans, rely on Polarex for meat and furs and pelts. However, one part of the Polarex, the liver, is extremely toxic and should never be eaten.

Facial characteristics

Polarex, while similar to Grizzlus in many ways, have a narrower facial structure and a longer neck than Grizzlus. Their eyes are black or brown and their ears short and stubby.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Polarex range across the arctic regions in Highwind, Atlantea, Arctica, and Arcticus.

Discovery

From the notes of Doctor Ivan Sanderson.

"I have spent many moons and many seasons observing both Polarex as well as Grizzlus, and I have come upon a remarkable theory: that perhaps these two creatures could perhaps be cousins of some sort! Through my observations I have found a great many similarities between them. However the closed-minded fools of the academic field simply don't see it. I have said time and again that one must keep an open mind in this field of research. In fact I believe in any field of research, it is best to keep an open mind. However, many remain closed minded to the idea that their theories and their perceptions could be wrong, and I can't imagine why they would ever think this way. After all, some of my own theories have been wrong in the past, and I find it just as exciting as when they are right! That's science!

While Polarex and Grizzlus may seem dissimilar in many ways, in many others they are very similar, if not exactly the same, and I believe the ways they are different are simply in how Polarex have evolved and adapted to cold weather climates. Maybe I am a fool for believe that the academic field will one day open their minds to all the wondrous possibilities in nature. Perhaps they will always remain closed minded and set in their ways."
