Equatorial Sea
The Equatorial Sea spans the equator of Magicians' End. Although technically it includes all the equatorial belt, in common usage it is usually understood to refer more specifically to the stretch of water separating Myruthea in the northern hemisphere from Punjuki to the south and east, beyond the Zurle Sea.
Localized Phenomena
The Equatorial Sea is subject to frequent storms as moist air rises from the hot tropical waters. The cloudscape at the head of the article is a typical example.
History
The first successful crossing of the Equatorial Sea from Myruthea to Punjuki took place very early in the age of the New Kingdoms and together with the discovery of Tinturbean opened up entirely new frontiers on Magicians' End for discovery, exploitation, colonisation and conquest.
The Equatorial Sea, dividing the ancient and largest continent from the second largest by a relatively narrow strip of water was very well travelled in all subsequent ages, until the Planar Conformation woke the Deep Sleepers and all ocean shipping had to stop, throughout the realm.
It was therefore hugely significant when Walthar Bass discovered that it was safe to cross the Equatorial Sea again, made his fortune and established that of the city of Nephatar at the start of the age of the Water Kingdoms.
The sea is now almost as frequently crossed by airships as by sailing ships but it still plays a central role in the life of commerce and trade on Magicians' End.
