The Fortress of Ocroven

The Fortress of Ocroven was the headquarters of the Limit Protectorate built on a small isolated island in the middle of the Orothonian Ocean, about half way between Novanoir and Tinturbean.   It was here that Prince Rygarde kept the Limit Diamond and assembled the Fate Stones.   The site was likely picked because it allowed relatively easy oversight of Tinturbean and the Dark Domains. The fact that it was so distant from the major centres of population and power on Myruthea and Punjuki is generally considered an indication of the respect, bordering on fear, which Prince Rygarde had for the Denizens of the Dark Domains. The Limit Prince would rather risk the dangers of insurrection from local forces than risk failing to monitor activities behind the Hylacon Gates. This bias would cost him dearly in the end, because it permitted the growth of the Loyalist Thaumatic Army Council.

Purpose / Function

The Fortress of Ocroven was created to provide Prince Rygarde with the support services he needed to maintain control over Magicians' End after the successful invasion that established the Limit Protectorate in 5149 APC.   The building was designed to house great arcane engines and energies, and as the prince developed his plans, to become the fulcrum for his arcane projects with the Fate Stones.

Architecture

The fortress was constructed from olivine, quartz, granite, brass and strangely coloured glasses. Its interior consisted of a confusing maze of twisting corridors and spiral staircases linking great halls and vaults. The most important rooms were the Throne Room where Prince Rygarde presided over operations. This was in the centre and at the top. The Great Gate was a vast relatively open space where a dimensional portal to his home realm in the Limit Lands had been built. The Gate itself could only be opened intermittently, although it was part of the prince's plans to change this and to make additional gates. For this purpose he required full control of the Fate Stones. The Fate Snowflake was the room where he gathered the stones with the Limit Diamond at the centre and places for each of the six native Fate Stones set around it in a hexagonal array.

Defenses

Prince Rygarde relied on a combination of arcane defences and his Limiter soldiers to defend the fortress, but in truth it was not well protected because he had not anticipated anyone would have the audacity to cross the Orothonian Ocean to attack him here.
