Spearwings
Spearwings are a species of flying reptile found on Magicians' End which specialises in hunting ocean fish.
Basic Information
Anatomy
The wings are made of a thin leathery skin, stretched tight over a light skeleton of hollow but very strong bones and may be as wide as three metres from tip to tip. A long sharp beak and sharp black eyes help a spearwing to find and kill its prey which consists in the main of fish that swim in schools close to the surface of the oceans. A long barbed tail is used for balance but can also become a weapon in fights between males during the mating season.
Genetics and Reproduction
Spearwing males compete to impress females during the early spring breeding season which runs from late Authon to the middle of Mald in northern lattitudes, whilst in the south it is from late Tivith into Kerax.
Growth Rate & Stages
Females lay fertilised eggs on crude nests situated on cliff tops at the edge of the ocean and on isolated islands. These take between twelve and fourteen days to hatch. A further twenty days is all the time the chicks need before they can fly and the parents bring them food until then.
Behaviour
Spearwings follow schools of fish and often act as inadvertent guides to human fishing fleets, showing them where there is the best population of surface level fish.
