Arvolun
Arvolun is a port town at the northern egress of the Rowl River on the continent of Tinturbean which is currently a part of the Congress of Concerned Citizens.
It developed to serve the city of Quarowl and received an official charter from the king in 1636 APC. Until the development of the sky routes under the Four Aerial Courts, Arvolun was the quickest way to ship goods and people between Quarowl and Myruthea, and gradually took over from the older routes into the north that passed through Tarris.
Industry & Trade
The primary and original business of the town is to act as a transport hub for sea borne craft sailing from the other ports of Tinturbean, as well as from Myruthea and Punjuki. Cargo and passengers are transferred here between steamers going up river to Quarowl and the ocean going vessels.
Since the 1800s APC, a thriving local tourist trade has grown around the scenic prospects of the coastal cliffs, the attractions of the great Arcane Sigils and supporting services of expensive shops selling luxury goods.
Tourism
The town is seen as a centre for wilderness tourism in the far north. It is famous for the tall Aurora Sigils, fanciful arcane abstract sculptures which resonate with the northern lights. These were built in the 1740s by a collective of local artists. It has a number of artisan bakery and beverage cafés and a selection of expensive jewellery and crafting shops, all designed to draw people down the river from Quarowl.
Architecture
The town is mostly made of wood with semi circular warehouses and beautifully nested observatory towers. Stone and metal is used more sparingly for the Aurora Sigils and to improve fireproofing in critical buildings.
