Helbidden

The ancient town of Helbidden stands on both banks of the Greenwade River in south eastern Myruthea at the furthest point downstream where a bridge has been built to cross the already wide flow of water, through a largely flat and agricultural region. It is currently a part of the Trans-Oceanic Empire.

Industry & Trade

Helbidden is a local hub for agricultural trade and the provision of farming services. It has an important grain market, a fruit market and a livestock market, with buyers shipping produce both downstream to Greenwade Mouth and on to Sowtin, upstream to the Sphoolyn Hills, and overland and east to Tylisfort via Earthengrew. Farm machinery of many kinds is made and sold in the town and different sorts of agricultural thaumatic services can be procured here.

History

Although it is now a sleepy provincial backwater the ancient Kingdom of Helbidden was an early and important example of the New Kingdoms which superseded the smaller states of the Painted Peoples during the 10th millennium before the Planar Conformation. It competed directly with the likes of Ralsimoor and the lost cities of the north in a distant age long before the much more famous and later settlements of Klaractazum and Zalgurim ever graced the eastern plains of Myruthea.   The Kingdom of Helbidden was one of the founding members of the Trinity Moon Triple Enfolding and before the Sundering it had a fair, if not clear cut, claim to be the most powerful city on the continent. Although it faired better than Goolsyn in the aftermath of the Sundering, the collapse of the Trinity Moon Triple Enfolding was the beginning of a steep decline in the town's fortune and importance. Nevertheless, it was still one of the more significant of the local centres of power that co-operated to aid mutual trade and security in the age of the Twelve Wise Ones.   Early in the Myruthean Unification Wars it lost its independence when its small army was defeated by the greater forces of Zalgurim and it went on to become a loyalist hub for local trade within the Old Pale Empire, a quiet provincial role it fulfilled with little fuss until the Planar Conformation.   In subsequent years it has made little impression on history, its worthies and gentlefolk content to make their living under the prevailing political systems of the time without troubling to try to change them.

Points of interest

Though largely forgotten now, except by specialist historians, the resting place of the ancient kings of the Kingdom of Helbidden is Helbidden Barrow, which can still be found on the low eastern hills that overlook the river and the town, not far from the road to Earthengrew.
