Wyrms

Sometimes called Great Serpents, or Sand Wyrms, Wyrms are legless and wingless Dragonkin that almost resemble giant draconic snakes.

Wyrms have a serpentine body that can grow between 60 and 100 feet long, shedding their scales, like a Reptile, as they grow. The older the Wyrm, the larger they are. Like a reptile, Wyrms have a forked tongue and are scaled, coming in a wide variety of tones, from yellows and reds to greens and blacks. Wyrms also have a venomous bite, and some are able to spray their venom a considerable distance. Some Sand Wyrms have even been depicted with hoods, similar to that of a cobra.

Wyrms are native to Exorsia and are extremely adaptive, primarily residing in swamps, jungles and even deserts, with the ability to swim, climb and burrow, allowing them to thrive in almost any environment. They are also incredibly hostile and have been well recorded hunting and killing people.

Wyrms first appeared in scripture as far back as myths from the Golden Age, such as the mighty serpent Python, child of Apophis, that was slain by Apollo. Their population also reportedly spiked during the Bronze age, in accordance with the rise of Yuan-ti‌ cults. But after the end of the Exorsian Civil Wars, Wyrms are an extremely rare sight, with sparse sightings in the modern age.

While not as intelligent as True Dragons or people, Wyrms do seem to be smarter than most other Dragonkin, and have been known to speak Draconic and Abyssal, and they are frequently allied with the Yuan-ti‌ cultists.

Apophis

Wyrms are strongly associated with the dark God Apophis, who is believed to be their creator. Wyrms are important figures in the cult of Apophis, sometimes called the children of Apophis, and are worshiped by some Yuan-ti‌ as beings molded in their God's image. While Wyrms and dragons share similar biological traits that make them a Dragonkin, it is unknown how Wyrms are related to Dragons.

Wyrms are often found working alongside Yuan-ti. Outside of mating, Yuan-ti cults are the only other place that Wyrms cohabitate with each other as they are primarily solitary creatures.

Ancient legends tell tales of Yuan-ti cultists merging themselves with Wyrms, or using their blood in dark rituals to transform into terrifying monsters, ascending to be more like their serpent deity. Ancient art found on the walls of tombs depict these creatures and towering serpents with cobra-like spiked hoods and clawed arms.

Sand Wyrms

Wyrms are often found in desert regions, hence the name Sand Wyrms. Due to their similar name, Wyrms are often confused with Sand Worms, a desert dwelling species of giant Purple Worms. Especially since Wyrms also burrow beneath the sand, but unlike Sand Worms, Wyrms prefer to travel over ground, propelling themselves over the dunes at high speed.

Wyrms are one of the few recorded creatures that threaten Sand Wyrms, even going as far to hunt them. Wyrms have been known to pillage Sand Worm nests, and even bait them to the surface where they grapple and coil around the Worm, wearing it down with their venomous bite.
