Coatl Dragons

Coatl Dragons, sometimes called Arcane Dragons, have an incredible aptitude for arcane magic. Coatl dragons are one of the more mysterious and enigmatic dragon broods, devoting all of their time to the study of magic, they regard other beings as either test subjects to be observed and studied or prospective students.   Coatl Dragons love to collect spells which they keep recorded on their individual feathers, like how a wizard uses a spellbook, causing them to radiate magical energy.   They possess the same selfish and narcissistic nature that most dragons have but it’s tempered by curiosity and a willingness to learn and understand, at whatever cost.   Favouring magic over physical combat, Coatl dragons fight with spells and magical abilities until forced to do otherwise. When pressed into a physical confrontation, they prefer to stay airborne, blasting their enemies with their breath weapon and buffeting them with their wings rather than engaging directly with tooth and claw.

Appearance:

Coatl dragons are lithe, with long necks and winding, snake-like tails. They are quadrupedal with short limbs and large feathered wings that rise from their backs.    Newborn Coatl Dragons have more scales than feathers, their feathers fill in as they mature, and they often grow great crests or tail fans once they reach adulthood. Coatl Dragons come in a variety of bright, vibrant colours reminiscent of jungle birds, they take great pride in their plumage.

Element:

Coatl Dragons are not associated with a specific element and are instead able to cast spell-like breath attacks that usually deal fire or lightning damage.

Lair:

Coatl make their lairs in abandoned wizard towers or near places of arcane learning. They covet arcane knowledge, amassing hordes of spell books and magical artefacts in great libraries. Coatl have been known to share their hordes but it takes a lot of convincing and bargaining.
