Sea Serpents

Sometimes called Sea Drakes, or Sea Snakes, Sea Serpents are long, serpentine Dragonkin that lack legs or wings. They are found within the deep oceans of Exorsia and the Elemental Plane of Water. They are nimble predators and are known to attack and sink sea vessels, particularly those that sail the Endless Expanse and Jewelled Horizon

Sea Serpents grow to their full size, about the size of an adult Dragon, in approximately 10 years. They have shiny, fish-like scales and powerful, colourful fins that they use to propel them through the water at great speed.

While Amphibious, Sea Serpents rarely spend any time outside of the water, preferring to drag their prey to the depths. Sea Serpents don’t usually have lairs, as they can swim while sleeping, crossing vast distances while they slumber. Though on rare occasions, older Sea Serpents have been known to form lairs in coastal and underwater caves.

While older Sea Serpents are usually solitary creatures, young Serpents have been known to group together in small schools of 3-5 to hunt. Though those schools usually crumble due to inflighting, especially in mating season or when food is scarce.

While not as intelligent as True Dragons or people, Sea Serpents do seem to be smarter than most other Dragonkin. While they don’t seem capable of humanoid speech, they have been recorded communicating to other Sea Serpents complicated hunting strategies.

Sea Serpents seem to have a distinct hatred for Sea Dragons‌. They have been known to do battle, with Sea Dragons protecting ships from Sea Serpent attacks. There are also records of Sea Serpents banding together to attack Sea Dragon lairs.

This rivalry is curious as Sea Serpents share many qualities with Sea Dragons, such as serpentine bodies, an aquatic affinity and the ability to exhale a blast of pressurised water, suggesting that they are related. This theory is collaborated by the cultists of the Goddess Ceto‌, who they claim twisted a Sea Dragon to create the first Sea Serpent during the Silver Age.
