Algary

Archivist's Excerpt from: Orphan Heights: An Official History, CVI 42.4

"Home is where the hearth is"
— Motto of Algary Quarter

The southeast Quarter of Orphan Towne, Algary is boasts the largest residential areas of the whole settlement, or at least the densest, depending on how one measures it. There is little here by way of parks or landmarks, though there are a few, like London Park on the high tier. Little of this area has been transformed into lectral lighting by the Corps. of Lectral Incandescent Transitioning, and so most of it still functions off of oil lamps and evening Lamplighters, though the lamplighters don't manage the lamps inside the houses. That would cost extra.

Demographics

Known colloquially as the "Labour Quarter" in most of Orphan, Algary is home to the majority of working men and their families. It contains the densest housing, and (depending on whom you ask), the densest occupants. The folks of Algary are honest and legendarily forthright. There is little toleration for nonsense. The fathers are burly, hard-working men pulling long hours elbow-deep in tram engines or Limeiron smelters, eager for dinner and often a Widowmaker. The wives are patient and just as hard working at home, as it takes much to maintain a life so lived. The children are disciplined, read to rather poorly, and put to bed on time, and in general, these families, however basic and poor, are generally happy in their lot, though not too happy to refrain from complaining about politics.

Guilds and Factions

This Quarter is home to both the Corps. of Limeiron Forgers and the Corps. of Tramway Engineers, two of the largest and central branches of the Orphan Heights Corps. of Engineers, giving this district a hefty enough voice in the House of Commons of Parliament, but it generally doesn't get listened to much.

Architecture

Characterized by its "stacked" housing rows, particularly in Harchester, the curving lanes of its tenements feature grated "rooftops" overhead, forming part of the street of the upper level, and so forth, thus permitting Parliament to cram in all the more people. Beneath its upper level, the tramway circles the outer wall just beyond the brownstone houses, bricks being easily available in the southern portion of The Expanse's clay ground near Lostport.
