Shifted

Shifted is the 2nd rank in the Hierarchy of the Occult, representing a level of magical power just above nonmagical living creatures. More often than not, the status of Shifted is a Newmoon's first step up the Hierarchy and their first interaction with magic— which makes it all the more unfortunate that they rarely get there by choice. Because of the infusing properties of magic, any Newmoon affected by it (including spells, curses, transformations, and even physical contact with the higher ranks) will slowly build up a reserve of magic inside themselves and become a Shifted. This makes it the most populated rank after Newmoon, and the quintissential catch-all for magical conditions and conundrums.   As such, Shifted have gained a reputation for being unfortunate victims of fate or circumstance. It is true that many Shifted are thoroughly out of their depth, especially shortly after their exposure to magic, but in all but the most extreme cases they are free to continue their mundane lives without too much interruption.   But of course, being Shifted also creates the opportunity to climb higher up the ranks and tap into a deeper sort of potential...
