Hatem Matouf
Emir Hatem Matouf, Keeper of the Sacred Flame
Hatem Matouf was born in Mayakish, the capital, during a rare year of flood and flame — when Lake Mayak was high and a sandstorm scorched its eastern banks. Considered an omen child, he was raised with both reverence and scrutiny. His father, Emir Khalun Matouf, was a more reclusive ruler who leaned heavily on the Council of Embers. Hatem, however, showed early signs of charisma, battlefield cunning, and a talent for public oratory.
Educated by the Clerics of the Flame and trained by the Flameguard, he toured the nation on camelback at age 18, spending time in each major city to understand its needs — a pilgrimage he still reminisces on fondly to this day.
He fought in the Border Raids of 1656 against pirate incursions in the south and Imenian-backed rebels in the west. These shaped his belief in a strong, unified central government with regional flexibility — a principle he later codified into policy.
