Spinners

Spinners is located next to the northwestern top corner of Cutters and is often assumed to be part of the larger district; this misunderstanding is understandable for those new to Port Kolin, as Spinners is famous for its clothing, full of haberdashers, leatherworks, tailors and others skilled in the creation of fine clothing. Sharing much of the social outlook of their larger neighbours, Cutters, there is much collaboration between the districts, but to the trained eye, spotting a citizen of Spinners is a straightforward task; they all wear a unique scarf, the older the individual, the longer the scarf.
The Spinner's scarves play an important role for both the individual and their family, their construction begins at a person's birth and continues until their death; woven into each weft of the scarf is its owners accomplishments. The creation of this fabric code is taught only to those who create garments, but its reading is known by all who live in the district. It is the responsibility of the family members working with fabrics to maintain a scarf for each of their kin without the skill.
Upon a person's death, their scarf is collected by the family and added to a specially crafted display rack, built of many individually rotatable wheels. The scarf is mounted on the lowest layer of these remembrance wheels, facing out. This allows any family member to visit the remembrances, turning them to read about the lives and achievements of their ancestors. The family gathers once a month at their remembrance to read over the stories of the past while sharing a fermented, hot, spiced goat's milk drink. As quite a potent alcoholic drink, younger family members' drinks are diluted with hot goat milk. It is believed the fermentation of the spices with the goat's milk imbues certain properties in the drink, making it easier to hear messages from their deceased ancestors. As the brewing process and specific spices are a closely guarded secret, little investigation has occurred to verify the claim, but scholars at Chasarcanyor agree it's entirely possible to create such a concoction. With the recent upheaval in central Bretawald, the sacking of Wayford and subsequent disruption of the northern trade routes, there has been a shortage in a number of key materials that are from the colder climes in northern Bretawald, especially the popular winter hare fur, prized for is luxurious feel as much as its insulating properties, and the key, hardy flax, used in much of the linen production. This shortage has started to increase the cost of many garments as alternative basic materials are sought out. This has led to the Kelstog Family gaining greater power in the district, buying up the few trade caravans that still brave the uncertain journey north; they are nearly in a position of total control of the shipments arriving. The cost of hiring their caravan trains is climbing, and there is little alternative, as those entrepreneurs who attempt to establish new caravan runs always ends bloody. The Shielded Wheel has begun to look into these events, but the large guild is slow to marshal its resources, and the Kelstogs are likely to have moved on to other activities by the time a full investigation is underway.
