Cutters
Cutter is a large district within Port Kolin, given over almost entirely to the creation of goods, from potteries, tailors, painters, and sculptors to alchemists and smiths. There are, however, very few shops selling these items; most are produced and sold to other businesses and trading concerns around the city.
The high density of these industries makes Cutters a natural home for artists of all types, working within varied industries and adding extra flair to what could otherwise be mundane in nature. This makes the goods crafter within Cutters highly sought after, as often you'll be purchasing a one-of-a-kind item, something that will never be created again.
The District can feel insular to those who are unfamiliar with the customs and cultures that have grown around such a high density of crafts. People in the district all assume that creativity is a natural part of life, and they pursue it with vigour, identifying heavily with the medium they find most comfortable working with. This makes the first meeting quite awkward for those new to the district, as they are asked what their medium is. This has developed into a kind of social compatibility shorthand; those with the great patience to work with marble find the flighty nature of that patisserie chef a little hard to bear. This view of the world is rooted in all parts of the social and cultural life of the district, with relationships founded on the compatibility of each other's creativity and children raised in large social groups, presenting a multitude of types of creativity to ensure the children experience as many ways to be that the community can so that their natural outlook and creative spirit can be found. This often leads to the possibility that a child could be raised by families different to their birth parent, seeing birth parents at one of the many social gatherings where the communities share their latest creations with each other.
Cutters has a great yearly celebration where they cease working for 2 weeks, opening up their workshops for their neighbours and friends to visit these private spaces and talk about the works they have been doing, sharing stories of inspiration for particular pieces. Evenings and nights are given over to the sharing of food, dance, song and story. Each little community within the district hosts an open night of sharing and bonding with those around the district who wish to attend.
