Port Kolin is an ancient city; it predates all known histories and is considered the oldest city in the civilised lands around the bitter sea. It’s a sprawling metropolis of nearly 2.5 million permanent inhabitants; it has races from all corners of the civilised world trading and working within its great walled expanse. Architecture spans thousands of years and has many styles. With the ancient being built on top of the newer, the works still visible from the city's dawn are a marvel that cannot be competed with, graceful arches whose spans far outstrip that achievable by modern stonemasons. However, much of this fantastical architecture exists only in the Shadowreach below the city, where the ancient buildings still exist. Below these ancient city levels, it opens into extensive mines and then finally natural caverns that lead into the vast Darklands, that spreads out across the realm, inhabited by the Cavern Elves, Deep Dwarves, Deep Gnomes and other less pleasant denizens.

Demographics

As a melting pot of cultures and ancestries its possible to find all manor of peoples within Port Kolin, however the main population breakdown is:
Human 59% Dwarf 10% Elf 9% Dromaar 6% Gnome 5% Halfling 5% Goblin 4% All other 2%

Government

Port Kolin is ruled over by Lord Krondar , supported by his council, the seats on the council are appointed by the Lord to those who he trusts and wishes to reward, it is rare for someone to be removed from a council seat but the holders of each is judged every few years on how well they are doing in their appointed positions. the current council is unchanged for the last couple of decades and the city is thriving under their guidance.

Industry & Trade

Port Kolin is the greatest trade city in the Maelstrom nations, all nations trades flow through the docks here and can be found in many of the sprawling markets. Bretawald exports much of its fine armaments, jewelry and clothing from here, along with much of the excess fish. It is also a thriving hub for exotic travelers, arriving from other nations or most distant lands, or those young and adventurous seeking their fortunes. The city itself boasts some of the finest crafters within Bretawald as they have ready access to even some of the most exotic materials and as such it is far from unusual to see wealth patrons from other nations walking the streets looking for someone who can make peerless and unique items for them. Port Kolin also boosts both a very extensive library containing many rare tomes, access isn't available to all and gaining the trust of the lorekeepers is far from easy, but many travel here to do just that. There is also one of the Maelstrom nations oldest collages of magic, which again due to its prestige is attended by folk from all across the Maelstrom nations, hoping to learn some of the ancient secrets said to be held by the college.

Infrastructure

Port Kolin is a city of many ages with architecture from the last few thousand years still visible in some parts of the city.
Built upon the ruins of itself many buildings sub-levels were once the houses of residence in ages past.
A quirk of the great city that has no clear explanation are the quick doors found throughout the city. these doors can be found scattered through the city, walking through one will lead you out another in some distant part of the city, it is unclear exactly how the work, but assumed to be some form of limited teleportation. The locals are familiar with the common sigils found on them denoting where in the city each end of the door is. There are rarer sigils and guides can be hired to help navigate to the rarer ones.
The greatest unanswered question about the quick doors, is that they move, there seems no pattern to it, some doors remaining in location for many years while others moving on a weekly basis.

History

The true origins of Port Kolin have been lost to time, in the histories that are known its was a sizable and important port as far back as the 6th age.
The age of the city can be clearly seen in the changing architecture across the city with the most ancient and wondrous building towards the centre of the city, graceful sweeping arches and improbably beautiful towers reaching far up into the sky. The great sprawling catacombs under Port Kolin also give clues to the cities incredible age, with ages past building's having become the many layered sub levels below the current city, they not only sink deep into the earth but also sprawl out far beyond the confines of the current city.
Port Kolin has been the capital of Bretawald for many thousands of years, with only the slightest of rumors that it was not always the case vague references to both a "Nudort" and "Sliver City". It is entirely unclear if these are the same city, or if they are just earlier, forgotten names for Port Kolin.
