Eques

Singular: Eques

Plural: Equites

The Equites are the cavalry units of The Legion, serving as mounted soldiers. The role of the Equites evolved over time, from early cavalry to auxiliary forces supporting the legionaries.

They serve as scouts, flankers, and rapid-response units in battle. They are used to chase down fleeing enemies, protect The Legion's flanks, and perform reconnaissance. In some cases, they also engage directly in battle, charging into enemy lines to break formations.

Equipment

Weapons

  • Spatha: A longer sword than the gladius, used for slashing from horseback. The spatha is better suited for cavalry as it provided more reach.
  • Hasta: A spear or lance used for thrusting at enemies during a charge.
  • Pugio: A small dagger carried as a backup weapon.
  • Verutum: A light javelin used by some cavalry units for throwing before engaging in close combat.

Armor

  • Lorica Hamata or Lorica Squamata: Chainmail or scale armour, which provides protection without overly restricting movement. Some Equites also use a cuirass (breastplate).
  • Galea: A helmet often equipped with a plume or crest to signify the soldier's status and unit.
  • Scutum or Parma: A shield, typically round (parma) or oval, smaller than the legionary's scutum, and easier to handle on horseback.
  • Caligae or Campagi: Footwear suitable for both marching and riding, though cavalry might wear specialised boots.
  • Tunica: Worn under the armour, similar to that of other soldiers, but sometimes tailored for riding.
