Report: Shields and Wards against the Mist

Author: Anne-Line DecroixDate: 180 days post-Mist — Confidentiality: Public
Objective
Present the working of the shields and wards we are using against the Mist and our ongoing research.
  Background
Even after surviving the First Exposure to the Mist, we are far from being out of dangers. It is therefore imperative that we develop efficient shields against the Mist and its dangers as soon as possible and that all of us are able to use them to their full power.

Mechanism

What are shields and wards
Post-Mist, a few individuals have develop the ability of making a Mist shield appear in front of them when threaten. We have been able to enhance these shields by creating anchors so as allow them to be stronger and bigger bigger and to last for longer. By stretching the use of anchors even further, we have been able to create wards, i.e., shields that cover an entire area rather.

How anchors work
Like the weapons we have developed to fight against the Mist, anchors use activated metal, ie., metal that has been melted and mixed with blood so as to infuse it with Mist and make it more reactive to additional Mist.
For shields: Metal is activated using the blood of the individual with the shielding ability before being forged into a bracelet. To use it, the individual puts the bracelet-wearing arm in front of them and forms the shield at the surface of the bracelet on the side facing outwards from them. When the shield touched the metal, it gets attached to it.
For wards: The metal is not pre-activated. Instead, it is only melted when the ward needs to be created, at which point the metal is poured in the desired shape, usually a circle. The individual with the shielding ability drops some of their blood into the metal, then they project their shield over the now activated metal and it gets attached to it.

Ongoing research

Giving shields to everyone
Currently, only people with a shielding mist ability can trigger a shield or ward, although we have managed to allow other people to then take it over from them and to sustain it with the addition of their own Mist. We are now investigating how to allow anyone to trigger them, with the goal of giving every Lillois their own shield.

More functionalities
We also want to extend what we can do with wards so as to allow for more subtle properties: instead of just blocking all physical contacts, a ward could focus on only blocking Mist, or objects moving above a certain speed, or maybe even just on filtering gases... The possibilities are infinite if we can get this to work.

Conclusion

Please be aware that the research department is doing everything that we can do get working shields out to all citizens of Lille as soon as possible. If you already have one in your possession, be very mindful of their current limitations when using them against the Mist and its envoys, and please report to us any troubles they give you.
