Report: Mist contamination

Author: Anne-Line DecroixDate: 67 days Post-Mist — Confidentiality: Public
Objective
Share all currently known data regarding Mist contamination as well as current hypotheses and ongoing investigations.
  Background
More than the monsters coming out of the mist to kill us, contamination is the higher danger created by the Mist. So long as we do not understand how to fight back, we do not stand a chance of long-term survival.

Mechanism

First exposure to Mist: The Mist invades the brain in an irreversible manner. Individuals' neurons can either adapt and survive or die. In case of survival, this can have several effects on the organism:
  • Very low exposure: No effect.
  • Low to medium exposure: People develop Mist abilities, with types depending on both exposure level and on individual personality.
  • High exposure: People become contaminated.
  • Very high exposure: People change physically and become a mostly brainless Mist monsters that attack everyone around them.

  •

Symptoms and markers: Contaminated people do not show any physical manifestations of it. Our pre-Mist technologies are all gone, impairing our abilities to perform brain scans. However, individuals with Mist abilities related to healing and who have examined the brain of people pre- and post-contamination have not been able to notice any brain changes that could be used as a marker of contamination or even that could be attempted to be reversed.

Consequences: Contamination can stay latent for days or weeks after exposure. It manifest as the contaminated individual suddenly snapping and either attacking people around them or working in concert with Mist monsters and disabling our defences to let them attack us. This is extremely dangerous, as there is no telling who is already contaminated, and as contaminated individuals remain highly intelligent.

    Predictors

We currently hypothesise that exposure level is not the only predictor of contamination, as different individuals react differently to the same exposure level.
      Current hypotheses:
  • Some people believe who is able to survive and who succumb is predestined, but there is no proof of this, and we do no know that genes are not the only or strongest predictors of First Exposure survival (see Survivor statistics).
  • There are signs that appear to indicate that progressive increase of exposure level could help avoid contamination, however proceed with caution (see Mist abilities for more details).
  • Individuals appear to be able to "fight" the Mist and contamination to retain their mind, in a manner similar to the clash of wills that occurs when individuals oppose their Mist abilities. If this is true, then the best way to fight the Mist is to believe in your own abilities to do so and for the people around you to do the same.

  •

Best example: Anne-Line Decroix was exposed to incredibly high exposure level immediately post-Mist, but she has survived it out of what appear to be only sheer will and spite.

    Conclusion

Contamination and the possibility of contaminated individuals already lurking among us unnoticed is terrifying. However, we should not cede to panic and recklessly kill people at the sightless doubt. This would only play in the hand of the Mist monsters.
It is important to remember that, in a way, all of us who have survived First Exposure have a form of irreversible “harmless contamination”. What we need to do now is to find a way to help those who undergo another high exposure to fight against the Mist and overcome contamination.
And remember, if this happen to you, succumbing to the Mist is not inevitable. So long as you believe you can fight back, you have a chance.
