Objective
Share all currently known data regarding Mist as well as current hypotheses and ongoing investigations.
  Background
During the early morning of Easter day 2020, a mysterious Mist covered Western Europe and probably the rest of the planet. This Mist killed more than 99% of people and animals and caused most modern technologies suddenly failing to work. The appearance of the Mist also coincides with that of monsters that are attacking any surviving living beings they find. If we want to guarantee our long term survival, it is vital that we understand the root cause of it all: the Mist.

Physics

Aspect: The Mist looks like a strong fog covering the entire country and not moving away no matter how much time passes. The ambient temperature under the Mist stays roughly the same, around 5°c, and there is no wind and no rain.
Effects: Since the Mist has appears, all electronics have broken down and all combustion engines have stop functioning. In addition, there are no signs that a nuclear catastrophe has occurred from the lack of cooling of all the nuclear reactors in France and a lack of people to man them.
Mechanism: Our best hypothesis so far is that the Mist affects gravity and also potentially electrostatics and the fundamental forces between subatomic particles.

Biology

First Exposure: Mist is not natural to our world, and so most living beings here are not adapted to survive it. When we first come into contact with Mist, it rushes through our body, upsetting the working of our cells and causing practically everyone to die immediately.

The survivors: Less than 1% of humanity and of other living organisms managed to survive First Exposure. Survivor statistics reveal that individuals who have survive strong exposure levels to Mist during First Exposure often happen to have relatives and unrelated friends who survived, hinting that genetics and emotional links both play some part in survival.

Consequences: We have not survived First Exposure unscathed: the most noticeable effect is the accumulation of Mist particles in the lipids in our brain cells. This results in many going mad under the effect of Mist contamination, making them betray humanity to the Mist monsters and Shades. Those of us who have not instead have developed strange Mist abilities related to our personality and foremost concerns at the time of First Exposure.

Origins

Since the Mist has appeared, anomalies have been in some places. They take the form of faults into reality, gigantic jags suspended in the air at different altitudes that seems to give into dark space from which more Mist is coming out. As Mist monsters come from these faults and are always more numerous around them, the study of the faults is very difficult and dangerous.

Conclusion

Research priorities:
  • Improve treatment for Mist contamination to allow more people to survive strong exposure and injuries from Mist monsters.
  • Improve our understanding of Mist abilities, of how we can reinforce them, and of how new ones can be developed.
  • Better understand how Mist affects pre-Mist physics so that we can develop weapons and wards and shields against the Mist.
  • Understand the Faults and where the Mist and monsters come from, so that we can get rid of all of them.
