Hazlan

The Domain of Dread known as Hazlan is a realm of bleeding skies, warped landscapes, and terrible ambition, ruled by a magical aristocracy whose cruelty is matched only by their obsession with arcane mastery. In Hazlan, magic is not merely a tool—it is a birthright, a status symbol, and often, a death sentence.

Hazlan is ruled by Hazlik, a bald, red-robed, tattoo-covered Red Wizard of Thay, whose cruelty is matched only by his brilliance. Though originally from another world, Hazlik now uses Hazlan as a living experiment, shaping it into a vast magical laboratory.

  • Hazlik resides in Mount Nyid, a tower-laced mesa surrounded by arcane storms and impossible stairways. He is reclusive, but all-powerful.
  • His rule is enforced by a magical elite: the Mulan, a class of arcane-blooded spellcasters who treat the peasant majority, the Rhazalim, as expendable tools.

The Mulan justify everything—slavery, warping of life, mass sacrifice—as "necessary magical research."

Hazlan is a land of institutionalized magical horror:

  • Villages vanish overnight when a wizard decides to "study planar overlap."
  • Children are born with glowing veins or translucent skin due to magical radiation.
  • Arcane plagues roam the countryside—living spells made sentient and rabid.
  • Abandoned constructs, runaway rituals, and unstable zones drift through the land like magical fallout.

Spellcasting academies called "Sanctums" serve as both universities and abattoirs. Their students often die or are transfigured into spellbound horrors.

Hazlik seeks not just dominion, but transcendence. He believes pain purifies spellcraft, and has begun the Tattooed Ascension—a ritual meant to etch every spell in existence upon his own soul. To this end, he experiments on his people, particularly twin girls, Leyla and Beyla, whom he believes are key to perfecting soul-division magic.

The Mists tolerate Hazlik not for his tyranny, but for the despair he produces through misused knowledge—a cautionary tale of brilliance without morality.

Hazlan is a domain of magical absolutism, where the elite wield arcane power like divine right and the land itself groans under the weight of ritual corruption. To live without magic is to be prey, and to live with it is to risk becoming the very horror you fear.

“In Hazlan, every spell is written in someone’s blood. The only question is whose.”

Geography

Hazlan’s geography bears the scars of unchecked spellcraft. Once rolling plains and orderly vineyards, its lands now twist with mystical contamination:

  • Razorgrass plains that slice the feet of intruders.
  • Levitating ruins, suspended by failed gravity experiments.
  • Glass-blasted deserts, remnants of magical duels gone apocalyptic.
  • Red lightning cracks the sky without warning, whispering forgotten formulae in the wind.

Nothing in Hazlan is untouched by magic. Even the air crackles with it, saturated with ambient arcana.

The People of Hazlan

  • The Rhazalim, the non-magical majority, toil in fear and quiet rebellion. They whisper of forbidden rites, pray to forgotten gods, and sabotage magical infrastructure when they can.
  • The Mulan wear their tattoos and magical enhancements with pride. Many graft magical runes into their skin or replace limbs with elemental constructs.
  • Cultists and rebels hide in underground ruins, seeking to awaken anti-magic relics or bind cursed spirits that can fight Hazlik's tyranny.

Despite the despair, Hazlan seethes with resistance simmering beneath terror. Folk legends speak of a ghostly scholar who undoes spells with a touch, or a wandering weaver who can unravel magic as if it were thread.
