Hazlik

Hazlik, the Darklord of Hazlan, is a masterful yet maddened archmage, trapped between ambition and illusion. Once a promising Red Wizard, Hazlik’s unrelenting vanity and thirst for power have culminated in a cruel fate: ruling over a domain where his magical might is always just out of reach, and his authority is sustained by paranoia and control rather than true supremacy.

Hazlan is a land of arcane academia, political intrigue, and shifting alliances, ruled by a mage whose power is great but flawed:

  • The Tower of Hazlik stands as the domain’s seat, filled with dozens of apprentices endlessly studying, scheming, and sometimes plotting against each other—and their master.
  • The borders of Hazlan open and close at Hazlik’s whim, allowing him to isolate his realm or unleash its sorcerous influence on the wider world.
  • Magic suffuses the land but is tempered by Hazlik’s limitations, giving rise to unusual experiments and dangerous magical innovations born of necessity.
  • The populace lives under a shadow of suspicion, watched constantly by the master’s sigil, their freedoms curtailed by his omnipresent gaze.

Hazlik’s torment is one of imperfect power and endless vigilance. He wields immense arcane knowledge but cannot fully manifest his potential, leaving him frustrated and desperate. His endless watchfulness and distrust alienate potential allies, while his obsession with magical items consumes him.

Hazlik is a proud archmage ensnared by his own illusions—ruling a fractured domain through surveillance, ambition, and a desperate hunger for power he can never quite grasp.

  • His face is marked by sharp, arrogant features, with eyes burning a fierce green—an unnatural glow from constant use of his personal arcane focus, the Eye of Hazlik.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Hazlik’s downfall began with rivalries and betrayals among the Red Wizards—especially with his former apprentice, Indreficus. When his enemies conspired to overthrow him, Hazlik’s world shattered, and he found himself cast into a grim netherworld of fog and torment. Here, the accusatory voice of Indreficus endlessly haunts him, reminding him of his failures and insecurities. Though he rules Hazlan with an iron will, Hazlik remains aware that his domain is less real than the world he lost, a revelation he has yet to fully grasp.

Social

Mannerisms

  • Vain and Egotistical: Hazlik truly believes himself the supreme being within Hazlan. He views others—apprentices, servants, and subjects alike—as mere tools or distractions in his grand design.
  • Paranoid and Calculating: He spies relentlessly on his domain’s inhabitants through the Eye of Hazlik, a mystical sigil that grants him constant surveillance and control.
  • Relentlessly Ambitious: Knowing his magical ability is impaired, Hazlik covets powerful artifacts and magical items, seeking to compensate for his inherent weakness and secure his dominance.
  • Detached and Amused: To Hazlik, everything is a toy or a resource—people, objects, even entire events are pawns in his endless game of power.
