Oselo
Oselo is a tranquil and verdant village nestled within the jungle-cloaked lowlands of Valachan, exuding an air of warmth and welcome that belies the dangers lurking in the surrounding wilds. It is the ancestral home of Chakuna, the domain’s Darklord, and it remains curiously untouched by the chaos that defines the rest of Valachan.
Beneath the pleasant surface, Oselo is not without tension:
- The villagers speak reverently and fearfully of Chakuna, whom they view as both guardian and divine predator.
- Some quietly resent the Trial, while others see it as a sacred balance—a pact with the jungle spirits and a blood-price for peace.
- Rumors speak of secret dissenters hiding among the villagers or the jungle’s edge, planning to break the cycle.
Though she rarely stays in the village, Chakuna is ever-present in Oselo’s lives:
- Her return is marked by silence and ceremony. Her mere presence commands awe.
- Children grow up hearing stories of her prowess, and the strongest youth aspire to emulate her, joining hunting bands or jungle patrols.
- Alters to the jungle spirits—and to Chakuna herself—dot the village’s edge, adorned with teeth, feathers, and bones.
Oselo is a paradox: a place of genuine care and rich tradition nestled in a land of fear and violence.
It is a sanctuary, yes—but one perched on a knife’s edge, upheld by blood, survival, and unwavering loyalty to a Darklord who watches from the shadows.
To many, Oselo is paradise. To others, it is a gilded cage, where safety comes at the cost of silence.
Tourism
Unlike the rest of Valachan—where outsiders are fair game for the Trial of Hearts, Chakuna’s deadly ritual hunt—Oselo offers asylum to a select few:
- Wayward travelers who prove themselves honorable or win the villagers’ trust are adopted into the community through sacred rites.
- Those so chosen are marked with ceremonial paint or beads and are granted protection from the Trial, becoming “of Oselo.”
- This custom is both merciful and manipulative—while it protects, it also binds the adoptee’s fate to Chakuna’s people.
Geography
Oselo rests beside a slow, reed-lined river and is shaded by towering canopies of flowering trees and fragrant vines.
- Thatched, stilted homes line well-tended dirt paths, with gardens overflowing with fruit, herbs, and brightly colored blooms.
- The people of Oselo live in close-knit harmony, practicing traditional crafts and storytelling under starry skies.
- Music and laughter drift from communal spaces in the evenings, and visiting traders are met with genuine hospitality and generous trade.
