Odaire
A land of colorfully painted cottages, cobbled streets, and toy-strewn shops, Odaire looks like a dream brought to life—a perfect village nestled in gentle valleys and surrounded by quiet woods. Laughter echoes from schoolyards, mechanical clocks chime the hour, and toys of every shape and size sit perched in windows and doorways.
But this dream is false, and its creator knows it.
Odaire appears at first to be a quaint village of human children cared for by their elders—but the truth is far stranger. The "children" are living toys, crafted in workshops and imbued with eerie semblances of life. Their “caretakers” are themselves creations or reprogrammed survivors of a vanished populace. Only the toymaker Guiseppe and his creation Figlio know the full story.
- Figlio, a marionette boy brought to life by Guiseppe's desperate wish for a child, rules Odaire from behind closed doors, unseen but omnipresent.
- The toys perform, play, and repeat stories on command—everything in Odaire is theater.
- Outsiders are welcomed with eerie politeness, encouraged to rest, play, and become “part of the family.”
The Puppetmaster’s Strings
- Figlio is not content with Odaire. He yearns to “fix” everything broken in the world—by turning it into a puppet show like his own.
- Through enchanted toys and mechanical birds, he spies beyond the Mists, watching other Domains with longing.
- His dreams are filled with visions of new audiences, new puppets, and a stage as vast as reality itself.
Life in the Village
- “Children” go to school, play games, and sing songs—but always with fixed smiles and choreographed perfection.
- Teachers and caretakers are stitched-together husks or enchanted toys who praise Figlio in rhyme and pun.
- At night, the village is quiet, but not still—secret workshops hum, and the streets are patrolled by hulking toy soldiers and jack-in-the-box spies.
- The Festival of Strings is held every week, a celebration where the citizens re-enact Figlio’s story of creation. No one may refuse to participate.
Notable Locations
- The Marionette House: Figlio’s lair, hidden beneath the village, filled with thousands of half-finished toys and surveillance mirrors. His voice echoes from the walls.
- The Grand Workshop: Guiseppe’s former home, now a twisted laboratory of cursed springs, gears, and whispers.
- The Wind-Up Woods: Surrounding Odaire, these woods are haunted by broken toys and failed experiments. They sing in the wind and sometimes move.
- The Puppet Grave: A forgotten glade where discarded, silent toys lie buried under the soil—some of them still twitch.
History
Guiseppe, once a lonely toymaker, dreamed of a son so deeply that the Mists heard him. When Figlio came to life, Guiseppe rejoiced—until he saw that the puppet had a will of his own, one defined by jealousy, control, and cruelty.
- Figlio began reshaping Odaire in his image. He turned Guiseppe’s workshop into a factory of living dolls, and turned the few remaining humans into servants or components.
- The village slowly filled with mechanical or wooden beings, all animated by alchemical tricks, cursed rituals, or Figlio’s cruel magic.
- Figlio demands absolute love and obedience—and punishes those who falter with “rewinding” or permanent silence.
